1972 Chevy 4x4 correct colors?

Hi guys, I'm working on a customers truck. Doing a 3/4 restoration the pickup was originally purchased new by his father and someday will be his sons. That being said I have the thing tore down to the chassis. He doesn't want to spend the money to blast and rebuild everything, however he wants the chassis painted and of course the body in show condition. He is going to drive and enjoy this pickup. My question is does anyone know the correct colors for the rear end, transfer case, transmission (SM465) four speed manual. and the front end. Obviously the motor was chevy block orange. Just want to get everything else right while I've got them out.

Dont know about the front/rear ends, but I am pretty sure the transfer case and transmission weren't painted. Might be the same for the front and rear end.

The frame, front end, rear end, drive shafts were all semi gloss or chassis black.

The SM456 & NP205 I have always painted them chevy orange, but The ones I have seen that have never been touched were more of a burnt orange or an orange/red. If you do some searching on this site you should be able to find some pictures.

I just rebuilt my transfer case. It looked to be red oxide primer

Re: 1972 Chevy 4x4 correct colors?

Thanks for all the info guys! Could it be possible that the SM465 was painted black originally. When I was cleaning all the grease from over 40 years of use, I noticed that under all that grease the transmission appeared to have spots of black. I never seen any orange on it. However the bell housing is multiple colors, as someone has changed the motor over and did a really poor job of painting the motor....I'm thinking that they painted part of the bell housing in that process. The transfer case I did notice some orangish red paint. I think I'm going to tint chevy block orange a little redder and spray that. I think I'll paint the axles with the frame to match.

Re: 1972 Chevy 4x4 correct colors?

No help with the 4 spd as mine is a TH400 unpainted with a grey pan but here is my NP205, looks to be engine block orange to me. I'm pretty certain this is how mine came from the factory but 40 yrs and a few owners there's no way to be 100%. As far as axles, I've only seen them done in chassis black.
