Getting Fuel to Carb

I am working on my brother's '69 GMC with a 305 V6. I can not get it to start but it tries to start with starting fluid so I am starting to think that it is not getting fuel. I by-passed the fuel filter to make sure that was not it. I also checked to make sure the sending unit was not clogged. How long should it take the fuel pump to get fuel to the carb?

Re: Getting Fuel to Carb

Less than 30 seconds. Pull the fuel line from the carb and put it in a quart bottle. See how long it takes to fill.

Are you getting spark?

Re: Getting Fuel to Carb

Yeah I'm getting spark. It has a new distributor, cap, button, wires, and plugs. I'm trying to get the timing done but I can't do that since I can't get it started. This simple fix has been a pain in the a$$

Re: Getting Fuel to Carb

You should be able to get the timing kinda close while cranking as long as the battery lasts.

Re: Getting Fuel to Carb

Points Type. I have not found a HEI type that will work with this engine. I will try to time it as someone cranks it. I will probably try an electric fuel pump.
