taping wheels while its in the shop

I saw a thread the other day where they had the blue looked like painters tape really thick on the wheels. It was in all the crevices and everything. It actually didnt look half bad

I was in my shop the other day and noticed my brand new wheels have grinding dust and crap all over them.

Im going to wipe them down really well and dry them and then I want to tape them up. I think it will protect them from "shop dirt" and also small things knocking against them.

I think the wheels are powder coated since they are black.

Any problem taping them for a long period of time without removing it? Any specific tape I should use that will be better than an other?

I think any tape will dry out sooner or later. But you should be able to clean off the old glue with minerial spirits.

Better off with buying a cheap Walmart Tarp cut it in to 4 pieces n use bungie cord around them. Some of the painter's tape available doesn't always do as you want it.

that would look funny and I definitely couldnt run to home depot and back with it. Thanks for the idea though I will be doing that when I paint anything in the shop. That will work perfect and protect the tires as well.

Any time I send something to Paint Prison...I put crappy rollers on...they always seem to cause an inordinate amount of work to get them cleaned up.

probably the best idea. but I don't have any right now. well I have 2 old back wheels and tires. I could probably pick some up cheap enough. but its 8 lug.

have you thought about psinting your wheels with plastidip that may be easier to remove in the long run

thought about it but I saw some nightmare pictures of people scraping it off. It not coming up nicely and being a nightmare to get out of the cracks. I dont want to take the chance on that.

They sell disposable wheel and tire covers at the auto paint places.

As a powdercoater, I'd hate to see you cover your coated wheels for very long with tape. Any residue that remains after removal is going to require measures to clean off that might marr your powder.

i went searching for the covers you were talking about and found another thread where they mentioned RV tire covers. Walmart has them for $24 that will fit my 32"ish tires. I think that will work. they are water proof and pretty sturdy and easy to take of with having to use tape.

Large garbage bag split it on one side and put over the wheels and tires. Cheap and U have plenty of extra's if need be!
U could even double them up and maybe use the draw string to close them up once covering the wheel.

I think if you use the new low tack 3M painters tape that you can find at any hardware store would be pretty safe. No-name masking tape tends to dry out and get hard, making it a nightmare to peel off later.

Most I have seen are using painters tape like what has been shown. There has to be a better way. I guess it all depends on how long its gonna be in paint prison too. Scrubbing old tape off could do just as much damage as the mess a body shop could create. You could always monitor the condition of the tape when you visit to check progress and re-wrap when needed or you could see if you can dig up another set of temp wheels. I've seen transport wheels made of both plastic and wood. The plastic ones or semi-expensive for what they are and the wood ones you'd have to make yourself.

I have had some experience with scotch painter's tape when I painted my truck. Wasn't really happy with how I expected it to be. Some bleed through under the tape. Don't know about the more expensive stuff though.

Nice new wheels are the last thing I put on a truck. No tape.

I use 3M 90000 Paint Defender Spray Film to protect the area below the bottom trim from rock chips. About 7k miles and no chips. This product might work for what your trying to do.

I do this every winter to keep the salt off of my wheels. In the spring time it takes about 5 min per wheel to remove, including taking them off to get to the back side.

I wouldn't do it, it's creating a habitat to fuel corrosion in the area below the plastidip.

A quick and easy wheel cover for the shop is an old heavy cotton button shirt. Push the sleeves inside and drape it over the wheels and it will hang there like it was on a hanger.
No bungie cord or tape needed.
Plastic bags are a pain because primer will stick temporarily. A blast of air and you have pieces of dried primer flying all over and maybe into the next primer coat.

Yep - concur NO WAY on the tape for extended period. If you must leave the good ones on as rollers or if just storing them, why go to all that trouble - just bag em in garbage bags like Andy said (i.e. split in back to put on wheels/tires that are on a truck already). That's exactly what I do.

Masking paper is cheap and easy to use and replace. But really I'd just put it on jackstands and pull the wheels until I needed them.
