Hello Board! Just bought 82k 68' C20 custom
I recently purchased a 1968 C20 from original family. Was a prior California truck until 93 and since then the family has kept in garage and basically used it to haul trashcans up to the street. I think they maybe had listed it on Ebay and maybe some of you guys remember it.
327ci with 4bbl Factory cold A/C turbo 400 4.10 gears Power steering Virtually no rust. prior repaint but could find no body work. Runs and drives great My question is that I want to drive and enjoy this truck and resell it after fixing some very minor cosmetic stuff. it has 16" split rims. I am missing two hubcaps. Will it hurt the value if i switch wheels to something later or keep originals. I can have originals powder coated and new tires put on but then will next buyer appreciate that or just put some early 70's wheels with dog dishes or even well chosen not run of the mill same as everyone else cool aftermarket wheels? |

Nice truck and welcome to the forum!
If it were me...I'd lose the split rims...like today. They are not desireable in the least and add no value whatsoever in my opinion.....lose 'em. Keep an eye for a set of stock 16"/8bolt rims and have them powder coated...remount your stock hubcaps and you are good to go. It sounds like you are teeing it up for a 'flip'? any more pics available? (interior? underhood? or?) All Good Coley

Problem is I am finding it hard to find any wheels factory caps will fit. Unless i go to mid 70's which have total different cap. Found plenty of ford wheels but they won't fit chevy caps. Found a set of near perfect 16.5's on rims but only except ford caps. What would help value, stock looking wheels with skinny tires or newer wide wheels and tires. I don't know what the buyers of these trucks are looking for.

There's been threads about fitting 68 hubcaps to "normal" steel wheels by adding clips. It will take a little searching to find them but they're very informative.

Nice find! You will instantly discover when you change your period rims to newer bump type wheels, hubcaps will no longer attach. Newer style hubcaps for bump wheels will not match your body style and will alter the character of the vehicle. Your rims are not "split rims" they are "lock rim" wheels. Split rims are completely different design, not to be confused with lock ring wheels. Truck tire dealers still work on lock ring wheels, just always carry a good spare whenever you travel, since truck tire dealers may not be as local as car tire dealers. What is difference between lock and split? I found a few people who can do them but trouble is I don't have a place to set truck to have them take them off and dismount tires then wait 3-4 days for powder coat and bring back. Plus find the two hubcaps I want to replace. I love the look of older rims painted with skinny tires but a few guys told me it hard to sell a truck that way. I will have more pics this week.

Split rims were never used on Chevy pickups. They were only used on some 1 1/2-2 ton trucks with dual style wheels. These 2 piece rims come together in the middle of the wheel, which was indeed a bad design. People often incorrectly call any rim that is not one piece a "split rim". Chevy pickups only used "lock rim" type wheels. The ring is only on the outer edge. The 16" lock ring wheel never had any recall of any kind and was used till the mid 70's. It all boils down to this: how authentic of a truck do you want own or peddle?

I would prefer it to be as original as possible. But if having original style wheels hurts the value or makes it harder to sell than I want to change. it seems that originality doesn't make these trucks appealing to buyers but convinces like A/C, tilt, pwr disc brakes, big wheels etc does make them appealing. What do you guys think?
