So I have 70 longbed C10 with a 350 stock. Would it be possible to use an impact wrench to remove and reinstall the harmonic balancer without having to remove the oilpan or transmission?

Yes, the balancer goes into the timing cover. You will need a puller for the balancer. I would replace the seal in the cover.

You shouldn't have to pull the Trans or pan. An impact will work. Or just stop the engine from turning whilst you loosen the bolt with a breaker. This can be done by using a screwdriver through a hole in the flex plate or balance YES! Puller, seal, patience.

Making a deposit and using the rental tool program at Autozone for free why not use the right tool?

You can use it to remove the bolt that holds it on, but that's just the start.
You need a puller to get it off and an installer to push it back on. These can be "borrowed" from many autoparts stores.
Don't try to put it back on with the original bolt. First of all it will be too short to reach or only catch by a few threads, likely stripping the threads.

And just so I understand, the impact will allow me to push the balancer back on without having to stop the engine from turning via wedging an object somewhere?

I would use a rachet to tighten, then torque wrench to spec to put it back on.

Get the correct puller and installer for this job. I attached a photo of the seal kit. You can buy the seal separate from the kit for under $10.00 anywhere.

If you are not familiar with this task, I would NOT use air tools to perform the job.

ok cool thanks. Ok I understand I'll need the puller to get it off and a tool to push it back on. I saw a video where the guy used the tool to push it back on but he mentioned that if you dont stop the engine from turning that the balancer will just spin in place.

If that is the case and it is very possible, then all you need to do is clamp a pair of vise gripes on the flywheel/flex plate and that will prevent the crank from spinning all the way around.

DO NOT use the retaining bolt to push the balancer back on!!!!!!!! If you do you will be removing the balancer again to Heli-coil the crank. Use a new bolt and anti-seize, they are cheap.

yes vibration from the engine, it starts around 45 and really vibrates after that.

That might not be the motor. Can you replicate it with the truck in park or Neutral?

Do you have a timing light? If you know about where the timing should be at idle (should be somewhere around 8 to 12* BTDC), if it's moved a lot that could mean the outer ring on the balancer has slipped and is causing the vibration.

actually I haven't checked to see if it vibrates in neutral or park. I will check that, if it doesn't I'm assuming we may be looking at maybe unbalanced drive shaft?

Or center carrier bearing if it has a two piece drive shaft. You can visually check the carrier or try pushing the whole drive shaft up and down in the center...

Use the tool from O'rieleys/Autozone, but slap grease all over the threads and the bearing on the front, as well as the inside of the new HB. There is no need to wedge the motor if you have two wrenches. One goes on the end of the threded rod to keep it from spinning and the other one turns and pushes the balancer on. That guy in the "Toolbox" video on youtube had a WAY tougher time than I did.

Grease and oil EVERYTHING and stop the motor from spinning with a second wrench...easy!

If it does it in neutral it could be a tire . Or like the guys said u joints. my box truck picked up a wicked vibration and it was the center joint. Started around forty and got worse the faster it went.
