1996 GMC rear sway bar too big?

I asked this question in another area and did not get much response, so I thought I would ask here.

I have a 1996 GMC C1500 ex-cab pickup, it has a 1 1/4 front sway bar and I have what I think are two rear sway bars laying around the shop. One is 3/4 diameter off I think a 94 Camaro, the other one, I am not sure it is a rear bar, I think it may be, but it is 1 1/16 diameter and I have no idea where I picked it up.

If I could adapt either bar, which one would be better? I tend to drive a bit spirited, but I am not looking to turn it into something that would out handle a new Vette either. I do pull a ski boat with this truck occasionally and would like it to feel a bit more settled when I am towing.

Is there any reason I should not try to use the bigger bar?

I think using such a large bar in the rear wold be a mistake. I think it would handle worse.
It's likely the inside tire would try and lift in a turn causing a loss of traction.

sway bars dont know or care if they are in the front or rear of a vehicle



but the larger one 11/16 would b a bit too large when paired with a 11/4 bar

Talking about the bar diameter isn't really relevant unless the lever arms are the same length. You could easily have a 7/8" bar be stiffer than a 1".

You can estimate the bar rate with a calculator like this http://www.speed-wiz.com/calculation...alculation.htm

You also need to account for the motion ratio to be able to compare different setups.

After putting both bars under the truck, it appears that the smaller bar would also be easier to install, and Snailed, thanks for that website for the calculator, that looks like it will be very informative.

A stiffer bar will also make the ride more harsh. It takes away some of the independence of the wheels. Whenever one wheel tries to react to a bump or dip, the other is forced to do the same.

A 92-99 Suburban has a 7/8" bar. With a couple 3" exhaust clamps and 4 holes drilled will bolt on and fit like a glove.

I have a fat bar in the back of my '86. That vs no bar was still a vast improvement. I def think its a shade to big at 1-1/8th but it corners way better and in a more civilized manner and helps the overall feel of the road.
