1968 AM/FM Raido interchangeable
I would like to change my radio out to a AM/FM radio. What other chevy truck radios are interchangeable with a 1968 model? I was looking at one on eBay that looks like one from a 1979 or 1982-86' model but I am not sure it will fit. Any suggestions? Not really looking for one with the modern features like iPod docking or digital readouts. I want to keep it kind of period correct. If it has a 8-track or cassette player on it that would be fine too.

The AM/FM came out in 1971 IIRC , and it was used in G Vans through the late 1980's so they're out there .
I'm still looking , in the same boat you are .

Re: 1968 AM/FM Raido interchangeable
I bought a am-fm off of E-bay that had all kinds of pics in the truck but it looked like a early 80's truck radio to me. It was in a 72 and the dash did not appear to be cut any.

I have a Custom Autosound system for sale if you're interested. Not sure how retro you need it to look but it looks more 'factory' than a modern 1 DIN.

Re: 1968 AM/FM Raido interchangeable
The 67 - 72 C/K series truck radios have the shafts spaced 6-1/4" apart (center-to-center).
They changed to a narrower 5-3/4" shaft spacing on the 73-up C/K trucks. Like VWNate1 said, the G series vans kept the older style 6-1/4" shaft spacing well into the 80's so those would be your best bet for a direct fit. The shaft opening holes in the 67-72 truck dash are considerably larger than the radio shafts (the extra space being taken up by the mounting cups). With that in mind, a radio with the narrower 5-3/4" shaft spacing probably would still fit the opening, but the shafts will be off-center of the holes and you'd need some sort of trim bezel on the front to cover up the gaps. |
