6L80 4WD to 2WD
Hey guys,
I have been looking into converting a 6L80E 4wd to 2WD from a 2011 silverado LC9/6L80E 4wd package I bought. I have research a bunch on here and LS1tech. This is what I have found or am planning on trying. I am going to keep the short output shaft that is in the 4WD trans and install a camaro houseing extention(see picture). I may have to get a larger tailshaft bushing and seal. I am using a 4L80 slip yoke. I will post pictures of the motor/trans. Oh and this is for my son he is 15 1/2 and will get his permit this next week. I have been guiding him on the project as he is doing the work. Best thing ever for a young man to learn a skill and take pride in what he has. Iinstead of the damn video games!!! Scott

Re: 6L80 4WD to 2WD
The camaro housing has a non slip tail shaft... the so you might run into an issue there... the trans, drive line and center section are all solid on camaro while the slip movement is in the axles...
There is a full conversion for 4/Awd transmissions to 2wd. It involves pretty much removing all component and changing the output shaft and a different rear housing... |

Re: 6L80 4WD to 2WD
I agree there maybe an issue. I have a 2 piece drive line so in a sense it will be just like the camaro. I am not sure if it will work but I am trying nice I don't want to tear the trans apart.
Thanks for the comments

but not a slip shaft... you would have to purchase one with a slip shaft similar to this one Hart Rod bought to use the camaro output shaft... http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...358692&page=46 |

Re: 6L80 4WD to 2WD
I guess I have a question. What would be the difference between what I have now on the truck it has a 350/700r4 and 2 piece drive line and the slip yoke on a 6l80?

Re: 6L80 4WD to 2WD
Ok so a camaro housing will not support a slip yoke? According to the cad drawings the bushing and seal are the same just the length of the housing is shorter on the camaro than the truck. Since my drive line is mounted in the center with a carrier bearing there should not be any slipping going on in the trans technically!

Re: 6L80 4WD to 2WD
Thanks for the links Hart_Rod I have looked over all of them quite a few times.
ok for a few bucks I am going to try this. I am going to use a 4WD 6L80E, a 24226788 trans case extention from a camaro, and a 4L80E 6" long slip yoke and see if I can make it work. if i can that would save a lot of money and help a lot of us out..... or not! but what the hell I will almost try anything once!!!

Re: 6L80 4WD to 2WD
So I received the tail shaft housing for a Camaro. It fits perfectly just need to remove the seal for the 4wd output shaft in the transmission and remove the 2 small freeze plug looking plugs to allow ATF to flow around the tail shaft up to the yoke seal. Since I have a 2 piece driveline with a stationary mounted driveline. I will be taking pictures when I can. Does anyone know how or how hard it will be to remove the little freeze plug looking plugs at the rear of the transmission?

Re: 6L80 4WD to 2WD
Ok this will take a little bit as I am doing it when I get time. The attached photo is of the rear of the transmission with the transfer case adapter removed. The little 1/2" freeze plug type plugs on the top and bottom will be removed to allow trans fluid to move in and out of the tail housing. In te photo I have already removed the rear seal.

Re: 6L80 4WD to 2WD
Ok so I drilled a small hole in the small plugs and put a screw in it and removed the plug with a slide hammer. Was a little tough but got it.

Re: 6L80 4WD to 2WD
Here it the long screw I tried first. But after I got them out I forgot to take more pictures until after the housing was put on and torqued.

Re: 6L80 4WD to 2WD
Ok so I got the driveline lengthened and painted. I installed it with the 4l80/th400 short slip yoke (4-1/2") I bought. I had to have the driveline lengthened by 4".
I will post additonal pictures as I was running late when I took these.
