how do I remove the shift lever stock 4 speed trans?
I'm considering pulling my trans (engine is already out). Can someone tell me how to disconnect the shift lever? Do I just punch this pin out, or is there some trick?
Thanks

That sheet metal retainer is a "cam lock".
Take a pair of channel locks and grab it at the top. Rotate while pressing down and it should twist right out. K

Try using just your hand first. Press down on the ball and twist. It's a 90 degree thing as I recall.

Re: how do I remove the shift lever stock 4 speed trans?
Easiest way is a hammer and screw driver. Place the screwdriver tip in the corner at about a 45* angle. Give it a decent tap down and counter clockwise and it should come right out. If you can pull it with your hands there is an issue with the roll pins and they are not holding enough tension on the retainer. If that is the case the shifter should have a decent amount of slop. You can replace the roll pins or put a clamp around them to hold them taught.

It's not as hard as some people make it sound, just use your fingers to push the entire cup straight down, while it is in the down position, turn it to the left half way. It should pop up ! Now just lift out the Leaver. Hope that helps....

Also make sure it's in neutral then push down on the cup (it's spring loaded). Then turn left and let it pop up and lift the shifter out. I usually do it by hand.

No channel locks or hammers required! Just some man hands! Nice work!

I remember the first time I tried to figure this out on my own lol, couldn't believe how simple it was after someone told me the trick.
