Ideas for an air cleaner?

Hi! Car gatherings (Nifty50ee's) will soon to be here (thank goodness!), I'm not going to buy another carburetor, so, I'd like to at least have a nice air cleaner system to compliment my engine compartment.
I've spent way too much time this morning scouring the internet for possibilities. I just picked the one below cause it was different. but I was leaning towards Cold air Intake system? I had noticed last year during the HOT days, the engine didn't run nearly as well as the cool time we're having now, that's why I considered cold air.
Any ideas are certainly welcome!

It looks like you have plenty of hood space. Maybe a thicker carb spacer or even a velocity stack would help with the hot underhood temps.

I kind of like this type of cold air setup vs. the conical one you posted. It looks more like a hot rod setup.

I did look at this, the one you mentioned~ would it go to the front radiator support or through the fender wells? Actually I'm not sure it could make it to the front radiator support due to AC. The Alan Groves brackets put the AC/alt really far out. I'll look in a little bit to see what kind of room I have there.

I made something like this for my Buick Gran Sport years ago out of all stock parts so it looked original. It was pretty neat with scoops under the front bumper on each side, it looked pretty mean.

I've always liked this one, could always add a little ducting for the cold air intake. it's a custom version of a 50's era caddy. If you google '56 Ford Phatty' the article says what/ where it is from

I personally don't think you should go to far. You have a nice engine compartment and to "fit" there would I believe what you have in the photo but bigger. A fresh air would be cool but not so fancy shancy, it wouldn't fit the rest of the picture. Don't over think it, something simple, and functional like the rest of the place, nice and chrome like the rest of the engine compartment. It will fit in and look great.

Personally, this is just taste we are talking here, just opinion. (I have to say that sorry). But I don't think the Caddy one would work. Because it looks good by it's self, doesn't mean it looks good on THAT engine (I love the Caddy and had an original my self once). If you were to change the valve covers to early Vette, and put black plug wires and remove the braided lines, PERFECT, the Caddy fits and would look awesome!

Again, personally, that is what MY trucks engine compartment would look like if I was running a V8. I love that look and there is nothing better on a small block than the early Vette covers. Hell, I have no intention what so ever of running a small block (not my thing) and I have a pair of those valve covers up on the wall of my garage as "art" which they are.

But in this engine compartment with the other things that are done, I vote no on the Caddy.

Again I have to say PLEASE take this as ideas being tossed out there and not a hit to anyone personally, please. I am a big believer in following a theme. If you follow a theme you just can't go wrong.

Wow Brian, that's beautiful! Didn't realize how large it is! But it is gorgeous against that extraordinary engine!

The factory two four Caddie had a cool one that I am going to loosely copy for my truck's air cleaner being the theme is a factory hot rod.



What does the rest of the truck look like? What is it's theme?

I do not think a cold air intake will reduce under hood temps, only the air temperature to the carb which will help with power. Engine will produce the same amount of heat either way. Getting rid of it will require hood louvers, inner fender louvers, or intakes to pressurize the compartment and force in out the bottom into the slip stream.

I have to say that my cold air induction did nothing for performance and I think it actually hurt it. I had the Fremont Drag strip here in town at the time and I found that the car didn't turn as good a time with the "cold air" induction. What I believe was happening was the scoops were down just a few inches above the street and the pavement is so hot the air off the top of it was hotter than the under hood temp!

Actually what you have fits in with the rest of the shiny stuff pretty well just as the painted Caddy air cleaner on the hot rod's engine with Corvette valve covers fits it's theme pretty well.

Chevrolet Performance has a pretty decent looking chrome air cleaner one of the engines on the cover of their 2014 catalog that would look great with the rest of the goodies on your engine and shoudn't be a bank breaker but look a lot better than the parts house low buck one.

Personally I don't like that. The funny thing about that air cleaner is it is basically a stock unit found on something like a 1970 Camaro.



Is this "nostalgic", I say not at all being that in 1970 that air cleaner would have been the very first thing pulled from that motor! So fast in fact, you would have burnt your fingers on the wing nut so you could toss it in the trash and put a chrome one like we are suggesting!

What is the theme of the truck? If the theme it's 1973 and it's good old truck with a stock 70 Chevy small block swapped in then that would nail it. But the rest of the engine compartment doesn't fit that.

1. There is nothing but nothing that says more than a theme.

2. However, it's YOUR'S so you can do anything you want if it makes you feel good.

OK~ One thing neat about air cleaners, I could have a few on hand like my heels! lol I just pick and air cleaner for the occasion! Those batwing air cleaners are plentiful! Some engines they look perfectly at home, then others, they don't.

At the car shows with the hood opened, that's obviously the first thing that catches most onlookers eyes, just looking for something unique.

I can't express enough, do what makes you feel good. My suggestions are only that, suggestions. I have had a lot of fun with the whole "theme" thing over the years.


It's funny because the theme "It's 1953 and I just bolted in a Corvette motor" is EXACTLY what my theme is! And every single nut and bolt on the truck from bumper to bumper is going to fit that theme. Is it the "right" way to build something, that is opinion and everyone will have a different one. But if I follow a theme on every nut and bolt I can't make a mistake, it will always fit. And the fun part is personally I have and will study a bunch to do it. I have been studying GM Motorama cars for years being I LOVE this era. I am thinking about every single nut and bolt on this build. Literally it will have period piece hose clamps, I want it to BE this Motorama truck built in 1953 that never existed. I have had a lot of fun with the whole "Theme" theme. Right now, I am building my truck, I have explained what it's theme is. My Gran Sport, it is exactly as I would have bought if I could have afforded it when I was a kid, a muscle car updated to 1970ish. It's Got the little bigger Buick Rally wheels (called "road wheels") a 70ish steering wheel used on the GS, SS, or Vette, disc brakes from a 70ish Cutless, the air cleaner is the same era SS Chevelle. Other than that, it's as Buick made it in 65. Of course some American five spokes may be even better for the look but I wanted the original look so I went with the original wheels, only they are 15/7 instead of 14/6.

Then the Rambler, my daily driver, it is stone stock, I want nothing what so ever changed, I just dig it like it is.

So do as you like, people think I'm crazy for what I do, but you just can't go wrong with a theme, what ever it is. It can even be abstract as mine is with my truck. Just have fun!
