Lifter nut
I have a lifter nut that keeps backing off and ticking. Is it ok to use locktite on these or is there some trick to keeping them tight?
I was told long ago to loosen them until the tick then tighten them one full round. Is that accurate? Thanks in advance. |

Re: Lifter nut
First check to see if the nut is backing off or the rocker stud is pulling out of the head.

Re: Lifter nut
It's definitely the nut. I can tell by comparing the amount of threads on the top side of the nut after tightening it and it backing off.
Does anyone know what those clips are called you can clip on the lifters to minimize the oil being slung everywhere? |

Re: Lifter nut
Hugh, they are a self locking type deal if anyone at any time has taken down the motor with a impact, you will probably need another nut to solve the problem. Yes you can loosen the nut until the rocker starts to clatter then tighten down until it stops[with the motor not running and your doing this you will be twisting the pushrod between your fingers when it stop moving that term is zero lash] then you can go some where between 3/4 turn to 11/4 turn. that is where the one full turn comes into play most people find it best when they split the difference. You can get a locking type nut that has a set screw in the top of it so that once the lifter is set then you crank down the set screw, but I really think if you just got a regular rocker arm nut to replace the bad one you will be fine. jim
