GMC into Chevy?
I've heard a number of people talking about turning their GMC into a Chevy. Why would someone do that? No GMC pride? Thoughts?

Re: GMC into Chevy?
I considered it when I bought my GMC first. I ended up just pulling the drivetrain out and putting it in a chevy that needed it more. Now I have what I was originally after. I like the extra lighting the GMC provided, but I liked the look of the chevy more.

Re: GMC into Chevy?
Well for me growing up, we always had GM cars, Dad, Mom, Uncles, Aunts, Cousins etc. Except for my Papa. He drove a 56 GMC Short step with a Pontiac V8 engine. I always thought there was something special about GMCs. I've owned two new Yukon's and now the 72. I think Papa would approve.

Re: GMC into Chevy?
Back in many many days past people would buy GMC's to work with and Chevys a little less so. Or at least that was a general concenus back then but I did say that was long ago when they did carry different drivetrains. I like the 4 eye's my self but I also like the bowtie 's as well. So we could go round and round like we are at Bristol banging into each other all day then still all being right and all liking each other when it is done. Z10 I think your Papa would be proud as well. Jim

Re: GMC into Chevy?
The only time we ever did it was so we could race our GMC pickup at a Super Chevy event.
The rules have changed enough now that we wouldn't need to in order to participate. K

Re: GMC into Chevy?
This is an age old debate , and it has to do with things GM did to increase sales , at the core a GMC truck and a chevy truck are the same truck ! But their are people that will not buy a chevrolet YES I know its hard to believe but its true SO GM made the GMC for those folks ! Just like say a 1967 camaro vs a 1967 pontiac firebird EXACT SAME CAR ! Today you don't see it as often but people still swap chevy noses on gmc trucks and camaro noses on firebirds its the same idea ,,, would I do it ? No

Re: GMC into Chevy?
Ive always thought of running a gmc front clip with a chevy headlight wiring harness and using the extra headlight holes for a ramair setup. Not sure if it has been done or not. Mines a chevy and gmc clips are hard to find in my area. If I ever come across a good deal I might have to try it. If It didnt work I could just put chevy clip back on

Re: GMC into Chevy?
When I got my 68 GMC from the original owner it had sat unmoved for over a decade. The battery leaked and ruined the core support, pass inner and outer fender and battery box. After looking unsuccessful for a GMC core I turned it into a C-10 ! I do have a "Real" 71 GMC ! People just love all the Chrome on the front end of the GMC.....

Well it's your lucky day! I just installed a Goodmark replacement core support and it fit like a glove. Change that thing back. Oh Black Hornet, noticed your Chaparral photo in your signature. If you ever make it to Midland, I'll get you a personal up close visit with the 2J. My buddy has a key to the Chaparral Gallery.

Re: GMC into Chevy?
Z10 Thanks for the heads up ! I did not think the GMC core support was available ? Just Chevy's ? I always thought Jim Hall has been overlooked as a engineer ? His fan cars kicked but until they where banned ? O We'll ! I will take up your offer one day, a friend is moving to TX and I will have to go down and see you guys.......

Re: GMC into Chevy?
I've owned lots of GMs but the only Chevrolet I ever owned was an '82 Malibu which I subsequently changed all the badging and steering wheel to that of a Caballero, making it a GMC coupe.

Re: GMC into Chevy?
Funny, I had planned to do the exact opposite if I couldn't find a suitable GMC.
Tons of awesome Chevys around here but the GMC caught my eye and now I'm hooked.

Re: GMC into Chevy?
Thanks, they're named after the places I bought them...or well close to. Mohave is actually from Palmdale but spent most of it's days before I bought it in the Mohave Desert, Miami is actually from Pompano Beach, but hey who wants a vehicle named "Pompano"? Madera, Monterey and Aurora are actually from those places. Though soon Aurora will be history, I no longer have a need for a 7 foot tall, 20 foot long red 4x4 beast on 37s that gets 15 minutes to the gallon.

Re: GMC into Chevy?
My 71 GMC is named Olivia, after it's former Med Olive color long gone ! My 71 C-20 is the "Green Hornet" after it's ugly special order color picked by the Burlington Northern Railroad when new. My 71 K-10 is also Med Olive and so far unnamed.
