Temporarily sealing the vent window

My passenger side vent window on my 83 K10 Suburban is so noisy it's driving my crazy. Last year my son broke the hinge pin off the bottom so now it doesn't seal right (it didn't seal all that well before he broke it anyway!) and I don't have time to fix it right now.

I want to silicon the window shut until I have time to fix it. Is this a bad idea? I plan to replace the weatherstrip when I do eventually fix it. I put electric tape on it which helped but it's coming off now. I just need a temporary fix so I can hear the radio again.

Re: Temporarily sealing the vent window

I used some black RTV on mine and it worked fine. I never open the vent windows so I figured sealing them was no big deal.

I'd silicon it, it'll be that much more secure also. You can always slice it open with a razor when absolutely necessary.

Re: Temporarily sealing the vent window

Thanks. I'm gonna seal it up today. Is there any way to replace that hinge pin at the bottom of the window? I checked LMC and it's not available. Otherwise I'll have to search the junk yards.

Re: Temporarily sealing the vent window

My hinge pin was broken when I bought the truck. I pulled it out, removed the glass, and welded it back together.

Ever priced out complete wing assemblies from LMC? If I remember correctly, they are about $650 per side!

I also glued mine shut. I wont smoke in my truck and the wind noise was absolutely awful. I used black rtv and behind my tinted glass you cant even see it. I know its not right but its still much much MUCH better than it was.

Re: Temporarily sealing the vent window

Got me some black RTV and going to give this a shot. You guys that have done it...do you put it on the inside of the glass where is meets the gasket and the outside or outside only?

Anywhere the glass touches the gasket.

We did mine last weekend with silicon. It's wonderful how much quieter it is now.

Re: Temporarily sealing the vent window

Do the window wind deflectors like the ones in LMC catalog help with the wind noise any? As a less permanent solution maybe?

I have two ways to look at that. One is that it increases the value of the truck by 50%.

The other is that it's just the cost of a few tanks of fuel.
