What is this doohickey?

I've had a bunch of these pickups but never a '72. This is off the back of the dash cluster and goes up the steering column

That's the fiber optic wire that lights up your shift indicator when your lights are turned on.

Just a note, here.

In a blaze of stupidity, I cut mine in half once.

The fix was cool. I used some black shrink-wrap that
snugged both cut ends together tightly.

Fixed.

hmmm, my cluster has the bulb assembly, but the tube isn't hooked to it, yet my shift light indicator still works fine.
