custom junkyard air filter
I made this from an early 80's C10 housing. First I removed the snorkel to reveal the oval opening in the housing. Then I placed a piece of paper inside the opening and sprayed it from the outside with paint. This made a pattern of the oval which I cut out with scissors and replicated several more times by tracing and cutting on more paper. I then used small pieces of tape to secure my paper patterns evenly around the exterior of the housing and sprayed the whole circumference with a lighter color. After I removed the paper patterns, I cut the resulting stenciled ovals out with my jigsaw. Next, some prep and paint and there you have it an original low buck custom air filter. Later I will order a K&N element specific to the year model of the housing.

Re: custom junkyard air filter
I like it! It's a cool mix of stock and hot rod. I'll bet it took awhile to get all of the holes cut out and filed to size. You do very nice work!

Re: custom junkyard air filter
Very nice looking! It'll look even better with the K&N filter installed!

Re: custom junkyard air filter
Looks great. I have a soft soft spot for these factory air cleaners not sure why. I like your deco on the wall too!

Re: custom junkyard air filter
Great use of the old air cleaner housing. I have an old one I might need to do that to as well. I bought one of those chrome Edelbrock air cleaners and have decided I would rather have a more stock looking (even though it's not correct) underhood viewing experience.

Looks cool! I'll add to the notion of a K&N filter!

Re: custom junkyard air filter
That would match a set of Corvette Ralleys perfectly.

Re: custom junkyard air filter
you can get a k&n copy from jegs or summit for half the price. for a street rig the filtering should be fine.

Re: custom junkyard air filter
Looks good, I took two of those cleaners and made one I cut the snorkel off of one and cut out hole for it and riveted on the other side. so it had two snorkels coming out of the front. Did this on a 72 Blazer 4x4 I used to own...

Re: custom junkyard air filter
Thanks for all the compliments! Glad you like it. If I inspired anybody out there to make their own, I'm happy. I like to see good old American made stuff get a second chance.
