Short to Long Conversion?

Hey guys, I found this clean 72 C10 that I want to get. I really like this truck except for one thing, its a shortbed and I much prefer longbed trucks. With that said, has anyone ever converted a shortbed into a longbed? If so, how'd you do it? I was sure if it would be easier to find a good 127" wheelbase frame or cut and lengthen the existing shortbed frame. The next issue is the bed. Would it be worth it be worth it to cut and extend the bedsides or just go out and find a clean longbed to swap on. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks

Re: Short to Long Conversion?

Ive been thinking about extending the 67 myself , my boys been complaining about his 68 shortbed too , we may extend both of them , you can haul more in a longbed , im thinking about going longer than a stock longbed about a foot ' in the front and an extra 6" or so in the rear , I also think im gonna put a swivel in the frame behind the cab for when you go around a curve , I dont have time to get started on mine this week im going to hawaii but when I get back next month im gonna try to get mine started ! a build thread would be good too so ther board members can see how to do the work , parts wont be a problem they are plenty of NOS shortbed sides out there we can cut them up to use to make our long beds ,

Re: Short to Long Conversion?

That truck pictured is kinda rough ? It needs rockers cab corners and floor pans , hey did you guys see that shortbed that guy found in a barn ? That one would make a killer longbed !

Re: Short to Long Conversion?

First guess is April Fools, but...

Considering that the short bed is rarer and more sought after, selling/trading it for a long bed would be far faster and cheaper.

But if you must, long bedsides are available as well as long bed floors. Adding to the frame will require 2 welds on each side right where the load strees is, as well as 2 welds behind the axel. A long frame swap would be better in my opinion.

Re: Short to Long Conversion?

I was just messin around, If you're serious by all means do it to it. I'm thinking finding a long frame and bed would be much easier, and you could probably even trade the short bed for a long bed (?) Not that one is 'better' than the other .. just saying there are a lot of Long-to-short conversions going on and short fleet beds are hard to come by. No offense intended or implied.

Re: Short to Long Conversion?

Nobody would ever stretch one if they had a shorty so I say happy April fools. Ok I'll edit mine too due to the above. There's too many longs out there that would just be easier in the long run. I like either and I like my lwbstep. But do I secretly wish it was a shorty......you bet.

Re: Short to Long Conversion?

I was thinking about putting a ford 302 in mine, I have one laying around and thought it would be nice to have my distributor up front. Does anyone know if they make an adaptor for a 302 to mount to a th350?

Unless you're pushing the ford off a cliff.

Re: Short to Long Conversion?

I once converted a 72 shortbed 2wd Cheyenne big block into a longbed 4wd with my dad. We sold the big block and put a 68 clip on it. Cool truck.

Re: Short to Long Conversion?

Yeah its just an April Fools joke. I thought it'd be kind of funny since everyone loves shortbeds to say you're gonna cut one up to make it a long bed.

Cool. Stubbies are less useful. In my eyes they are for those who rarely use theirs as a truck.
