New truck O/D question

I picked up a 1971 Chev 1/2ton for prolly 30 cents on the dollar, owner knows NOTHING of the truck he's had for 17-18 years AND had restored(repainted with MANY new parts) while overseas in '04/5. "3 speed auto?" I says; "yup, original trans rebuilt" he says, on the ride home I count the tranny hit 5 times every time....o/d with lock up convertor, 700R4 pan apon home inspection, but the convertor seams to lock up between 3&4(3 hard shifts, 1 soft, 1 last hard)...and NO wires from the trans. I've got a 700 in my Blazer with a B&M thingamubob for conv lock up, nothing in the 71-I've looked everwhere!! The electric plug on the side has no connector even! Is there a way to lock it up internaly without power? Older non-electric trans? I don't know and am looking for something here....

Re: New truck O/D question

The electric plug on the side is what locks the trany , if its unhooked your trany is not locking , should shift 3 times either way 1-2 , 2-3 , 3-4 , they make converters that are non-locking , that have no clutch in them , mostly used in retrofits , like what you have , your first gear must be really low , especially if you have 373 or 411 gears , most of the vehicles 700r4s were put in had 308s

Re: New truck O/D question

I was told there is a kit available that will automatically lock up the converter once you're in 3rd gear. Its internal to the 700r. Maybe a transmission guy can chime in and tell what kit that is.

Yes there is a kit. You might have gotten better responce if this were in the Engine & Drivetrain section. Clineburger(sp) hangs out there and is a professional transmission guy.

Re: New truck O/D question

Every kit I have ever seen requires 12 volts to run
