Replace roof

So I had my what I thought was a perfect cab blasted and sealed. Much to my surprise i found my roof a mess. Rest of cab beautiful...but the roof skin must go. Pulled skin off, today and have new skin on order. After searching I just, can't find a,good tutorial on how to attach the new skin. Mine is a 59. I've seen them glued on...but do we need to spot weld them as well? What if u don't have a spot welder? Thanks

Re: Replace roof

First off, you NEVER pull a welded on part off a the car (or truck) until you get the new part. I am sure you will be fine if you looked at photos of the new roof and so on, but it's just a rule you learn doing this work. You can't believe the ODD things I have seen where someone gets the new part and they removed something they shouldn't have.

That being said, post some photos of what your cab looks like now. Did the gutter come off? Did you drill the spot welds out of the rear of the roof seam?

Re: Replace roof

Check out Bam's (Kabwe) build thread. He replaced the roof on his cab. He's put a '55-56 clip on it but it's a '58 cab - not that I think there's any difference in the roofs.

Re: Replace roof

You left plenty of metal there and will have to take off more for the new roof. It comes with the full eyebrow that's spotted to the inner windshield seam. You can do rosette welds around the edge but you have to make sure its welded completely no pin holes or you have leaks that drip seal won't fix.

Make sure you have the existing drip edge bare metal and old spots smoothed out. You don't want any ripples in the weld seam. Weld bonding is a good choice for this roof. You can rosette weld instead of spot every 8 inches along with the bonding. Bonding helps seal up the seam around the top.

Re: Replace roof

Had to do the same to my suburban. It needs spotting all around the gutters and then originally I believe it was leaded and the frotn and rear seam (see picture)
