Header Gaskets that dont blow - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

in a previous post comparing headers to manifolds a major concern was with the header gaskets blowing. I replied to it about some gaskets i had gotten at R&D Speed in New Hampshire. I looked into it futher through them and the brand of the gaskets is BYSON. http://www.byson.com/ I never had a problem with these gaskets blowing in 7 years on the same engine with headers. Just wanted to update you guys.

I have never had a header leak after I started using manifold gaskets and cutting my header flanges. Better than 10 years now.

Coating them with RTV before they go in helps too. You could even use just RTV as a gasket!

mudder67, does cutting your header flanges make them much louder? im trying to stay relatively quiet up front, and that could be an issue.

cutting the flanges will allow you to get the bolts started easier and the bolts will stay tight. If you bolts are tight theres less chance of burning gaskets out. I have never burnt a gasket or had a leak, loose bolts, since I started doing this almost 10 years ago. I dont even bother to check the bolts anymore.

I use the manifold gaskets too, and it is awsome. I have NEVER blown one out. (Knock on woodgrain)
I have only found a loose bolt once too...but I guess that is just plain uncommon. I even put antiseize compound on mine before I installed them. (no cutting either)
For the collectors, get the dead soft alluminum gaskets.

I've been using some aluminum aftermarket gaskets in my last two trucks. Those worked great too! They are call Real-Seal.

Regular old manifold gaskets (Felpro), works like a charm. Thanks for that tip Andy, I've yet to have one cause a problem.
I use a little "Walker Accustaseal" on mine before installing them though. It's basicly exhaust pipe sealant that helps prevent the small leaks from starting, which turn into blown gaskets.
