Truck binds when turning.

It's a little hard to explain but when I make a turn the more I move toward locking the wheel the truck tends to want to not turn as tight as it should. Basically it will push the tires away from the turn in the front. I'm not sure what is the cause. It does have some wide front tires but so does my blazer and it turns no problem. Could it be something with the steering? Maybe it's not turning both wheels at the same rate. Any ideas appreciated.

The spindles turn on ball joints. The ball joints could be worn causing friction and binding.

Center link installed backwards, check that the inner tie rods are installed from the rear of the center link with the stud pointing at the front of the truck. Since you have two vehicles, look at the how the blazers center link is installed and compare it to the truck.

Take it to a front end shop to check it and if it checks out ok suspect steering gearbox. It may be time to replace it.

One other thing you can do is to raise the front wheels and try the technique to see if it is willing to go lock to lock. You can also check for any lose joints or links at this time.

Sounds like when you have the rear axles locked together...like on a 4 wheeler, they want to go straight.

Try doing the same turn in gravel or grass, if its that you will know.

Ya it acts similar to a posi but in the front and it's 2wd. I'll have time to check it out better Thursday. I don't have any other issues and it looks like all the suspension was recently rebuilt. Even the steering box looks new.

Here's some pictures of the front end. I tried turning the truck while it was sitting and no binding. It just doesn't turn nice and sharp without the wheels dragging when moving. It also tracks straight down the road. The only thing I can think of is the tires are too large. I have rebuilt the front suspension on my Chevelle and it looks the same, but does not do the same thing when I turn.

It sounds like the rear diff posi is pushing you straight. Make sure you have the posi additive in the diff oil. Does it seem to be jerky?

No Jerking and I haven't checked the rear. I just bought the truck a month ago and the guy who had it really didn't know much about it. He only had it a year and the PO before him did a lot of work. I have a posi in my Chevelle and it goes right around corners. If the rear end is causing it is it possibly locking up when it shouldn't? I have no noise that I can hear from the rear and it looks like the PO put a lot of work into the undercarriage. The bolts on the rear cover look new so it's possible a posi was installed.

Your center link is installed wrong. The tie rod nuts should be on the frontside.

Is the center link backwards or are the tie rods on the wrong side? The stud should stick forward from the tie rod right? I have to look at my Chevelle later I bet it's the same setup and I know it's correct.

i installed a center link backwards once boy does it leave you scratchin your head wandering whats goin on.
thanks too the board i got it figured out.

it seems about once a month or so there is a thread started on this very problem. its just too easy too put it together wrong

I definitely see the difference now. It looks like from the picture the center link is in fact flipped around as Carbuff pointed out. Is that correct?

If so I will have to pretty much take everything apart to correct it and I'm sure an alignment will be necessary. I appreciate all the feedback and will save me some cash as i know I can fix it other than the alignment.

For others reading this, remember that it helps to post as much detail as you can about the truck - like new parts were installed, if it ran good and then it failed, or if it failed from the start, etc.. This way we won't send the person posting in a wild goose chase. Posting a pic like Blazerowner did really help also.

That truck looks familiar... , I probably would have put mine on backwards had I not seen it done several times on here. Great thing about this forum, you can find pics of any part when you forget how to put it back together.

I'll try to fix it this weekend. Are the parts pressed together or will the just come apart when I loosen the bolts. It's been a while since I've done this.

They're a firm fit. If the parts were recently replaced they may come apart easier. I tend to unbolt them and smack the side of the tie rod with a mallet to pop it free.

You can also leave the nut at the end of the threads and smack that, but this method could damage the threads. Not likely, but possible.

So I couldn't stand it and had to see if I could get it done tonight and made good progress. I ended up unbolting the center link and the tie rods from the spindle and flipping the whole assembly around. It all broke free fairly easily with a few hits with the mallet. Everything bolted back up, but the tie rods are off on adjustment now. I had to spin the wheel a half turn to get the right amount of adjustment to get the tie rods back in the spindles. So now the wheels are not lined up which I figured would happen. I got tired of working on it so tomorrow I will jack it up and try to line them up as best I can so I can run it to the shop for an alignment. I'll post some pictures tomorrow showing the difference of the assembly as well.

Off to the alignment shop! I just modded my 67 to disc and had to run outside to make sure I didnt flip mine too
