pwr. steerin' woes?

low r.p.m. situation's make it a real %itch! only way to help the problem is to goose it some to give more ummph to the pump! is it possible to flush out the pwr. steering pump and the gear box also?one of those subjects (among other's..gasp!) that i'm not to up on.possibly a bad pump? just put a new idler arm on,as well as new ball joints,tie-rods and still having the same prob. was thinking that i might have a bad idler arm,or a bad tie rod that was causing a bindage....but problem still persists... anybody?

Sounds like a bad punp.. Is it making noise? If not, how many miles on the steering box. It may be all used up.. My bet is the pump.. Good luck..

no noise at idle, you know kinda of a "pump whine sound" for lack of a better description! but the fact that there is no noise at idle or even when throttle is meshed....only get a sound when you go to paralell(sp?) park and need to really crank on the wheel. at normal operating rpm's like 25-35mph,no prob.s but it does seem to wander a little, which the new parts did seem to stiffen it up some, but not to the point that it eliminated the wandering problem totally. maybe a new pump,or a rebuilt one would take care of the problem....was hoping that i could "flush it" ,cause the seals don't appear to be gone....no fluid leaks to signal bad seals......

You can flush the pump by disconnecting the return hose and running the old fluid into a pan. I don't believe that it will help as it sounds like the pump may have a problem.

It might be worth it to check the pressure relief valve spring and make sure it is not broken.

The pumps themselves don't go bad very often.

I'd just go ahead and replace the pump. A friend of mine picked up a remanufactured one for his '67 for only about $40-45. Works great.

sounds like the pump to me too. It's an easy change. - whatever you do, DONT get a pump or box from AGR. I had my origional pump for 21 years & it finally wore out & I got a high ratio box & a pump while I was at it & it craped out after only 2 years! They were willing to rebuild my pump for a mere 110.00USD. The pump is in my commuter so what am I supposed to do while i mail the pump to texas? Beware AGR.

just got home from my girlfriends place where i got a 350 smlblk. in the old chicken coop waiting for a rebuild(got it from a friend at work,he said it was a complete engine....holy crap it even has the pwr. steering pump still on it!!) complete engine...hei,wtr. pump clutch fan,air comp., alt., rochester pukejet carb, oil pan, attached to an original 400t tranny....again all complete......all for $150 bucks!!!! outta a tow truck 75-76 vintage should be a 4 bolt main...... kinda felt like i was takin' him! hard to find a comp. engine where you don't have to hunt and search for all the brackets and pullies from mis-matched years!!
