I love wiring, and here's a tip
I'm one of the 0.01% of car guys for whom wiring is one of my favorite parts. As I'm wiring my truck from scratch and testing as I go, I have a battery in it and the cables sometimes connected.
Rather than have the positive go right to the battery, though, I took some heavyish gauge wire and put a 30A auto-reset breaker in between the + post and the + cable. You couldn't crank the engine like that but its enough capacity for anything else. That way when the inevitable short happens it just trips the breaker. For me it was the not-yet-connected starter cable touched something. Could have been ugly, as anyone who's accidentally set a wrench across the terminals can attest to!

Nice tip! I'm with you on wiring, it's odd, but I find it therapeutic.

Re: I love wiring, and here's a tip
Cool tip! Couldn't come at a better time as I'm sorting my wiring and checking and testing circuits last couple days. Just tried to connect my -battery cable with a couple open grounds and left a nice chunk of lead on the post!

I haven't done my wiring yet, but I think I may be one of those weird guys who enjoy it!

You all ARE weird! I "kinda" like it too, but I HATE chasing PO wiring "creations" when they didn't really know what they were doing. I say that after removing the "household wiring nuts" from my 72 about a week ago... Ha. It is very satisfying knowing you did it all yourself - and therefore, also very easy to troubleshoot/fix problems down the road.

Wireing is my favorite part of this work also. I also like bench work. Rebuilding & detailing carbs, alts, & starters.

You can also use a battery charger to test your circuits as it will light a test light but won't blow fuses or burn up wires

Chasing PO issues does suck! But is unlikely if they didn't screw any of it up, we'd need to rewire.

Re: I love wiring, and here's a tip
Here's a twist to that endeavor:
I will do vehicle wiring, I understand most of it, but it definitely isn't my favorite thing to do on my truck at all. That said, I do like learning about it and understanding (when possible) from top to bottom. However....I absolutely love house wiring and circuits!! Whenever I get the chance to do reno's in the house or basement I'm always adding (correct) extra plugs, switches, outdoor receptacles, cleaning up wiring runs, etc....love it! Ha! Go figure. Coley

Re: I love wiring, and here's a tip
I enjoy the wiring part as well. I am a master electrician so I'm sure that helps a lot.

Re: I love wiring, and here's a tip
Go with Amercian Auto Wire brand. Best hands down. I rewired most of my wiring. Wouldn't use any other brand. 100% stock type of wiring with AAW
