700R4 question
The 700r4 of my truck is broken, I already bought an used that want to install on monday, the only think I notice on the new trans is where the speedo meter cable is conected is electronic. (vehicle speed sensor) I think.
Can I remove it from the old one and instal on the new one? Thanks. |

Does it have another electrical plug on it? Because it sounda like you may have a 4l60e. The electronic version of the 700.
Post a pic if you can and I'm sure someone here can confirm what you have.

The electronic speed sensor can be removed. The tailshaft has to be pulled and the reluctor ring can be swapped out for the speedo drive gear from your old trans. Then the speedo cable housing (or whatever it's called) can be bolted on in place of the electronic sensor.
I've done this to a few 700R4s and it's a bear to get the ring off, but it does come off. The attached picture is when I cobbled together a puller while the trans was in my 67 Chevelle, it would be even easier out of the vehicle.

While I upload pictures, let me ask one more question, I read 700r4 and 4L60, are basically the same, but could we swap also 4L60 and 4L60E with just adding the lock up converter as I did with the 700r4?
By the way the new trans is 1990 therefore I believe is 700 but I any ways I would upload the pictures Thanks LOWROLLIN for the picture |

I did exactly what lowrollin did but i cut off the ring. The housings can be found at any scrapyard

Being a 90 model trans, you should have the 700R4, as the above pictured one was from a 91 2wd Suburban and I've pulled a similar one from a 91 C2500LD for my mom's El Camino.
The nomenclature gets confusing, but here's a breakdown: 700R4 = 4L60 TV cable controlled, shifts controlled by the transmission pressures and TV cable position. Lockup converter is done with simple electronic switches (such as brake pedal). It can also be driven without a functioning lockup with no harm. (If the torque converter still has the proper trans input). 4l60E 1993&up. Computer controlled, shifts controlled by a computer. Can not function without a computer controlling the shift points and lockup status. Physically interchangeable with a 700r4/4l60 but will not work without a trans controlling computer (standalone or integrated with engine computer)

f I recall correctly, a 80's Oldsmobile with a turbo 350 trans has a mechanical speedometer driven gear housing /sender that is the same diameter of the electronic sensor/sender in the tail shaft. The 80's police Caprices came with a sender that had both electronic and mechanical hookups,, but these are getting hard to find. Try looking at PATC transmission"s website, lots of info on 700R4'"s-

A 4L60e has it's electrical connector (round) on the passenger side.
The 700R4/4L60 has a square connector on the drivers side. The exception is the '93 car transmissions (4L60) which had a round connector on the drivers side.
