LQ4 LY6 6.0 and NV4500 2wd?
I'm looking into putting a 6.0 and NV4500 in my 86 3/4ton in place of the SBC/SM465. I've read a lot online and I think I know a few truths now, but wanted to get others input too!
It looks like there are trucks out there with the 6.0 and NV4500 in one configuration. Most likely in 2500HD and 3500 trucks from 1999-2007(classic) But it looks like once GenIV set in and there was VVT or AFM GM didn't offer a stick with the 6.0 If all that is correct it would be cheapest to find say a 2003-2007 LQ6 with the NV4500 as a drop out. This has been difficult to find so far! So I'm wondering if it's possible to make a later LY6 work with an NV4500? Most specifically talking about the ECM and tune... Is it too much trouble to have a stick shift on an AFM/VVT equipped V8 that didn't come with it? Also, does anyone know a good source in Texas or elsewhere to check for the unicorn setup with NV4500 attached to the 6.0? Thanks! |

Re: LQ4 LY6 6.0 and NV4500 2wd?
The 99-00 trucks with the 6.0 had the longer crank, so the "ls" type nv3500/4500 would bolt right on (but then you gotta FIND that combo).
After 00, you need to add the crank spacer to run that setup. The t56 works as well. From what I understand, without the spacer, something like your sm465 would bolt on 5/6 bolt holes. There are also some v6 full sizes that came with a 5 speed, but I'm not sure WHICH 5speed. Wish I could be more specific, manual trans ain't my wheelhouse anymore.

I'm not sure what the difference between a gen III and a gen IV, but if you get a 2000+ gen III, any gm NV4500 will bolt right up. Get a flywheel from a 2006 6.0, and a 80s-90s 11 or 12" clutch. When I get home I'll post a link to a good thread on the subject. Just did this swap.

Re: LQ4 LY6 6.0 and NV4500 2wd?
No clue on the actual questions, but the later NV4500s, say 96 and up used a 5.6 1st which will probably be more streetable than the earlier walking 1st...
The later NV4500s used a somewhat unpopular hydraulic throwout bearing clutch actuator combo that you may want to look into. Advance Adapters has a bellhousing, bearing carrier package but it's about $350. |

This is about adapting an NV3500, but the swap parts are the same. |

Re: LQ4 LY6 6.0 and NV4500 2wd?
Good info guys! It seems very easy to get the NV4500 bolted up.
My dream is to find the factory 6.0 with the NV4500 already attached. I think I can also get an automatic 6.0 and flash the computer to a VIN from a stick car to get the computer right. But there maybe a few actual wires that need to be addressed too. |

So far the search has been without success! I'm now thinking about getting an LY6 and adding the transmission I want. So now I'm looking into whether or not the VVT will work with a proper tune to operate in front of a stick shift!
