Pics of the Atlanta Chevrolet plant

I drove by and took these today. These are cell phone pics so not too good. This is where some of our trucks, including mine, were made. I think this is sad, as I remember when a lot of folks were making a decent living working here. The first pic was a show room where they displayed the new models. The second pic is part of the assembly area but I don't know exactly what work took place right there. This was all inside of the assemble building back then. This was one of GM's most efficient plants back when it was up and going, but they shut it down rather than retooling it for a model change.
Atlanta used to have a Ford, Chevy, and B.O.P. (Buick, Olds, Pontiac) plant but now they are all closed down. The B.O.P. plant is still standing waiting for someone to buy it and tear it down.

Time marches on...

I would like to see any of the LA truck plant. That is where mine was made. (Torrence?)

Re: Pics of the Atlanta Chevrolet plant

I can relate. My 57 was built in Baltimore. We all know what happened to that plant. It's pretty sad they've let pieces of history like this go.

Re: Pics of the Atlanta Chevrolet plant

Thanks for posting these, I have a big connection with stuff like this, I like to stay connected with the past in that way. This is why I refuse to use reproduction parts on my projects, owners manuals, repair manuals, I want something with greasy finger prints on it from the past, you know what I mean? If my truck were built in that building, I would love to get a photo of it in there, that would be so cool!

We have one of the biggest GM plants right near where I have owned a few Buick Skylarks and Gran Sports were made and I love the connection to their "home". It's now the Tesla factory and looks like it may have a bright future. I have been thru the building and you can see all the places in the floor where machines had been mounted and spots filled with concrete over the years many times. I couldn't help but think that my cars panels may have been stamped right there with the press being held by one of those spots I was looking at. Here's my Gran Sport in front of it's home.

Re: Pics of the Atlanta Chevrolet plant

My pops '53 chevy truck was made in Atlanta... and he retired from the Doraville plant.

If any of you have any '65 chevy cars, there is a 50% chance he put the door handles on... hah.

I got to tour that plant as a kid on a class field trip in the mid-70s. By then they were manufacturing cars rather than trucks in Baltimore.

Re: Pics of the Atlanta Chevrolet plant

I remember driving by the Baltimore plant (I'm a northern Virginia native) as a kid, many times. I never went in it but I do remember it pretty well. My truck was built there and according to dmv records was titled in the northern Shenandoah valley for all it's life till I moved to New Mexico last year.
By the way Purcell: nice build you've got going on. I love these trucks in 4x4 trim. One of these days I'll start a build thread of my own.

Thank you. I'm having fun getting the frame stripped and painted right now. I'm hoping to have the cab mounted back up in a week or so, depending on how many extra shifts I put in at work.

As I recall, by the mid-70s the Baltimore plant was making Monzas or Vegas possibly, but I could be wrong. That was about 40 years ago.

I'm about 45 minutes away from the former GM plant in OKC now. They last made SUVs at this plant (Trailblazer?) before it closed in the early 2000s. Part of it is now being utilized by Tinker Air Force Base contractors.
