Faux weathered look?

Decided to attack my bedside with a sander. I'm thinking of doing the whole truck this way, being the truck has been painted over the original charcoal gray twice and looks awful. Thinking about going the shop truck look route and painting the truck rallies an off-white or a cream. What y'all think?

Re: Faux weathered look?

That really does not look weathered. It looks sanded and feathered.

Well the original color is the charcoal gray you see, then it was painted with a pink primer, then bright red, then a black base, then the maroon which I hate. Trying to at least get the maroon off and have the red and gray with a few hints of rust where I broke thru on the body lines. Whoever painted this was a bonehead. I'd much rather have the original gray and natural patina.

Re: Faux weathered look?

you will need to sand carefully and try to cut down to the gray leaving a bit of red and ya i think it could look really cool

Re: Faux weathered look?

I attacked the rest of my bedside yesterday. And played with some picture effects to make the red pop a little more. Do I sand thru more red to get down to the gray or leave as is and clear? Had several buddies say leave as is and flat clear it. But I'm on the fence about it.

Re: Faux weathered look?

I'd rather have it any color than that maroon.

Re: Faux weathered look?

Well, honestly, if you just try and clear over the "sanded and feathered look", chances are you'll end up with lots of wrinkling, lifting, rings and eventually peeling clear.

Also depends on if you have a knowledge of doing the paint work or if you're just going to walmart and harbor freight to get the stuff.

Re: Faux weathered look?

I don't think it has clear. I believe the red and the maroon were single stage

I'll not be doing it. I have a guy that will mask and clear it for $100.
