Question Turbo 292 or Rat?

I just inherited a 78 SWB C-10 with an inline 250 with 3 on the column. It needs some major bodywork, but I was more interested in the power plant first.

There is a guy locally that can help me setup a single or twin turbos on a 292. Has ANYONE done this? I can't seem to find strong parts for a 292 anywhere. Like steel crank/rods and such... Will I be wasting time/money on this dream of having a FAST L6 or should I build a rat and be done?

BTW, what is an approx. weight on a C-10 with no power?

Thanks.

well, a 292 will not have a huge amount of off the line power, even with the single turbo. if i was going to do it. i would either run the 292 with the twin turbo (for more tourqe off the line to get things spooling quick) or maybe build a larger 350 maybe and supercharge or turbo that.
thats my 2 cents....

well if ya got the money, get the 572!!!!!! twin turbo HP without the weak twin turbo tourqe (at low rpm)

I haven't done this, but I do plan on doing it. If you are going to do it, run twin turbos and not 1 big one. Spooling will be and issue. If you have a friend that can set you up, I would like his number.

Drop by http://www.inliners.org There is a forum on there also with A LOT of info. You might also want to call http://www.cliffordperformance.com

BTW, you would be GREATLY supprised at the amount of torque a properly setup/matched turbo will make at low end.

A twin turbo 292 could make a easy 400lbs/ft down around 2000rpm. Thats big block torque.

Yeah, I was told due to the firing order that twin turbos would be best. But, the money might be an issue if I can build a BB for half the cost. Leo Santucci spent $10k on this single turbo 292.

I'm sure I'd have more than that in a TT setup....

The question I have to ask myself is if I want to drag the truck or not. That would be the only reason for spending that much money on a motor. If I do decide to drag it, I may go with a big block just for ease/reliability over a totally custom turbo application....

We'll see....

the turbo would have the cool factor to it though. anyone can drop a big block in but its not very often you see a twin turbo straight 6

Turbo's are not always as easy as they appear.. If not set up correctly or ran safely on the right boost...it can be a tuning nightmare and very costly VERY fast!
