Question '64 rear brakes arent working?

So today I pulled the wheels off to see why it seemed to stop so slowly.it turns out the rear brakes aren't working.the fronts are working fine but when you hit the brake pedal the rears don't apply any pressure.it seems like everything is there and I googled everything but nothing came up so I'm stumped.here's some pictures if it'll help .they're manual brakes too.

This just start or do you know?
Does fluid come out of the bleeder when you open it?
Does you emergency brake work?
I would go ahead and do a rebuild on the rears if it was mine?

It is on the back of the plate, axle tube side / above axle tube... the wheel cylinder sticks out back there.

check out your 60-66 FAQ Index, under Brakes.

several threads there to get you on your way...

also check out the 60-66 Trucks, links: for the rear drum brake assembly by nufsed.

Re: '64 rear brakes arent working?

If I was a betting man, I would replace the rear rubber hose from the frame to the axle. They're not expensive and widely overlooked. They deteriorate internally and can actually completely stop the flow of brake fluid to the rear wheels, but not make the pedal feel that spongy. If there are no leaks, I don't see anything in the picture that would indicate you need to rebuild anything.

Just for safety, I'd install two new wheels cylinders and replace the rubber brake hose, it's inexpensive and you'll know what you have.

A couple drops came out but that was it.and I'll check that out.the hoses are really hard and probably haven't been replaced in 10 years so that'd be good to do anyways

Re: '64 rear brakes arent working?

it looks like the ebrake strut bar isnt attached on one side, and i think the shoes are worn down cuz ur self adjuster screw is all the way out... i just redid mine last week... and you can see how much thinker my shoes are compared to urs, i say new shoes and attach the strut bar and should be good!!! same on the other side of course...

Re: '64 rear brakes arent working?

upon further inspection, ur strut bar may very well be attached as it attaches to the ebrake lever and not the shoe...

That would be my guess too. I had the same problem on a blazer a few yrs back. not saying that's your problem but it'd possible...

Re: '64 rear brakes arent working?

I had the same problem late last year just after I got my truck back on the road. The front was doing all of the stopping. Turned out to be the rear wheel cylinders, which is an inexpensive fix.
