6l80 transmission Q's
I'm looking at a few swaps on ebay and am thinking I want either the ly6 and 6l80e or an L92 with an 6l80e. The l76 I am eying is out of a Pontiac G8. The output looks different than the truck and this concerns me as I have no experience withy these transmissions. Does the tail shaft adapt to early style driveshafts on the Pontiac or should I stick with the truck transmission. Are they the same? Also what is the oppinion of 6l80 vs 4l80? This is for my 2wd c10.

The G8 uses that goofy ragjoint coupler thingy thats a pain. You may be able to swap out the tailshaft housing for the truck style, but often it would just end up easier finding a truck 6l80e with the normal yolk. The car 6's got TuTd paddles, which the truck doesn't get.
In general, the 4l80e doesn't let many folks down, but the 6l80e is a step forward in gearing. Having 6 speeds is nice, and funny, in trucks that often would have had only 3. If you read some of the "changing output shaft 6l80e" and similar threads on ls1tech, you'll see a little more of whats-in-store if you decide you want to go after it.

I've seen some conversion parts online for them and it's expensive, I just see that it's cheaper to buy both at once. I may go with 4l80e since they seem to be more available.

In order to change out the output shaft on the 6L80 in G8's and 2010+ camaros, the output shaft must be replaced. It is the first part that is put in when the transmission is built, which means it is the last part to come out.....basically the entire transmission has to be pulled apart..... There are ways around it, I used a custom DSS drive shaft with an adapter and a Porsche CV joint. If you can get the 6L80 from a Denali/Caddy or a 6L90, it would simplify things.
