is this 67 68 gmc tailgate worth this price?
I am looking for a really really nice 67 68 gmc small letter gate for my build. I am not sure if this one is worth what he is asking. Any opinions. I have onre but mybody man said for the cost of repairing that one I would be better off spending the cash on a straight, clean survivor gate. I asked him if he would ship in a wooden crate. If he says no i will pass as i dont need another damaged gate in my shop. I dont trust shipping these things in just cardboard. Rod.http://www.ebay.com/itm/1967-1968-19...item2c7bf38a3b

Re: is this 67 68 gmc tailgate worth this price?
I'd pass. I missed out on a perfect take off tailgate with original paint and a few small scratches for $70 by about 20 minutes! It was listed about a week later for $300, which was a great deal but too much for my budget. I see them in OC (SoCal) for under $400 in nearly perfect condition quite often. If you're gonna spend $600 I'd wait for a nearly mint one to pop up. Maybe put up a WTB in the classified or keep a sharp eye on Craigslist. Also, check out the surrounding areas as well. BTW, I know you're looking for a GMC but they are out there as well.
Anyways, I would keep looking. Just my $0.02 BTW, here is the one I was talking about |

It's definitely worth what is being asked divided by two. Your body man can't make yours nice for under $600? These things aren't so easy to find

My body guy said around 1000 to fix mine just the body work. I also figure if I get a real nice original there will be less filler and less of a chance it will crack out. May post in the wanted ads but it will be hard to find someonw willing to crate and ship it to Canada.

Ok then,I see more clearly now. You should be able to do better than that with all costs involved on a better tailgate. I wish I could help you out.

Re: is this 67 68 gmc tailgate worth this price?
If it were me I would take it to a couple of other body shops, $1k to fix a tailgate seem way to high to me. Granted I don't know how badly it is damaged, but still it seems way too high. The other option is maybe offer the eBay guy $400 or so & see if he bites.
I see now you are located up North so that may limit your selection. Only you can really answer your own question if it is worth it or not. But you also have to take in consideration what costs you will incur getting that eBay one ready to paint as well. If your body guy is charging you $1k to fix your old one, how much will he charge you to get the new one ready? $599.00 + around $150 - $200 to ship it, plus whatever your body guy charges...$200, $300+? So by the time it is all said and done you could be at $1k or more with the eBay tailgate as well. Wish I were more helpful. Can you post a picture of your tailgate so we can see the damage to get a better idea? |

Yeah I didn't think my gate was that bad either. I guess a shop charging $100 hr its easy to get to a grand. I know he does quality work but not sure I want to afford it. You can see it in my build if you like.

Never seen a tailgate that high. Around here most are $50-200 tops for near mint condition.

Re: is this 67 68 gmc tailgate worth this price?
I was happy to pay $300 for the very nice original paint 67/68 GMC tailgate I got a couple years ago. I jumped on it because that was an awesome deal. You guys talking about cheaper tailgates are talking about the far more common Chevrolet tailgates that is reproduced. These two year-only far less produced and not reproduced 67/68 tailgates are worth more than those.
