High School Project Build
My name is Jeff Ferguson(Farmtrucks) and I teach Auto Mechanics at Hancock County High School in Sneedville, TN, where I have taught for 20 yrs.
To try and get my students and more students interested in my classes, I am wanting to do a project build. I have restored several vehicles over the years and know what is involved. I have never done this with a group of teenagers - so I may have a challenge, but I think they are up for it. Build plan is going to be a 70 c10 "Patina" pickup, LS, 4l60e, A/C, suspension swap(may lay frame, may not), and various other things(keeping paint work to a minimum, because we don't have a paint booth) Sponsors will be recognized in build thread and displayed on the back window of truck. After completion the truck will be auctioned off at some type of auto auction(Corvette Expo, Knoxville or Charolette Auto Fair), or E-bay - however this is not finalized. All proceeds will be going back to my class fund, so hopefully we can keep doing this ever year. This is in the planning stage for now but it is getting closer to reality. If you have an interest in helping with this project, please let me know. What do you guys think -- any suggestions? Here is my personal truck, and build will be something like it.

Re: High School Project Build
No advice, but I think it sounds like a lot of fun. I do have several questions.
Do you have a particular schedule to keep up with to ensure the truck is finished within the school year? How many hours a day will you be able to work on it in class? If spread through multiple classes will each class have a different piece to work on so they don't butt heads with the other classes?

Re: High School Project Build
I personally think having each class work on a specific part would be more meaningful. You will ahve your body ppl, drivetrain, interrior and etc.. then as you start a new project they could rotate. And then if your getting to the completion of the project and another class isn't going to be on time then yes have them to help out.. but finding parts and unexpected roadblocks are going to come up..
that's what we did while getting my degree in automotive technology.. True |

Re: High School Project Build
All I can tell by picture is that it's a 69-72.
I'd pick a 67-70 w/ drum brakes, since you are doing spindles and such. There's a lot to be learned, converting one, of course it sounds like a complete rebuild of the pickup is happening any way... Hope for pic's of build!!! |

Very cool. What those kids will learn is going to be a great foundation for their future efforts.
I'll dig through my storage & see if I have anything that can help.

We had the motor on the test stand and got if fired up
PSI made us a wiring harness for our test stand We had several clogged fuel injectors that we had to clean but after that she ran pretty good

Re: High School Project Build
Sounds like a great project. Should be a lot of fun for a bunch of young minds. I wish my sons high school had an auto shop class. I always looked forward to that class, I would always volunteer my car for any type of work to be done. I will be watching this build.
