welding ? is it rust or residue
I,m just welding up some 1 in. sq. tubing with a 110 wire feed and noticed it gets rusty color around the welds,is this residue or is it the start of rust.Just wondering cause the welds don,t have to be ground down as you won,t see them but I still want to paint it,I can get a wire brush in there to clean it up some what.

Re: welding ? is it rust or residue
Depends on the material you are welding and what kind of wire you are welding with. It could either be scale from the flux core wire, or the beginning of flash rusting. You can clean it up with a wire brush, actual rust will be harder to get off, scale will flake away.
Weld-thru primer is good for this sort of thing, as you aren't left with a surface that has been exposed.

Are you taking about the silica? How long after the weld does it show up?

Sounds like he's using flux core wire.
