Cummins In 72 Suspension Question

I have a 72 3/4 ton 4x4 that i am considering throwing a 4BT into. Ever swap I have seen looks to have a 4"ish suspension lift. I this pretty much mandatory? I would like to stay closer to the stock height. Thanks for the help.

With stock height, the oil pan is going to be sitting on your front diff, or pretty darn close. The drive shaft will be all in the way too. A 2.5" lift might get it but the oil pan will still be way close.

well, i know of a truck that clears at lower than stock height... haha

but yes, a lift is generally required. if you want to push the engine back a ways it helps you get it lower, but as ryan said, with the GM front diff, the driveline is close. oil pan can be modified to help with that, but it is easier to lift it a touch. lifted 4 inches and these trucks are still comparable to todays OEM trucks in height.

No, a 2wd will be fine. There's plenty of room for the cross member. The rear sump of the oil pan may be close to the ground if you plan to lower it though.

Re: Cummins In 72 Suspension Question

I have a 72 4x4 with a 6bt. Where my engine is sitting about the lowest I was able to get is a 4" lift using custom leafs from ORD. I wish I could have gone lower but it wouldn't be very usable because of oil pan to front diff clearance.
