wiring harness options....

So I took the 68 out for a little road test yesterday to assess some carb adjustment/timing issues, and after driving around the block, I pulled in to the drive and popped the hood. I noticed first that I was leaking oil from the drivers side valve cover on to the headers... no biggie, then I noticed smoke lightly rising from the wiring harness running along the groove in the firewall. I quickly shut the truck off and had grabbed the harness, and sure enough, it was pretty hot. It appears to be the original harness with a few cut and pastes here and there. I'm thinking I either want to buy a new harness that has been beefed up a bit, or build my own. I am wondering who has good replacement harnesses. I am not one to toot my own horn, but I am a bit of an electrical guru, I spent many years building, testing, and repairing slot machines and I build custom bikes and their wire harnesses from scratch, so I am not scared to build a harness.... just lazy

That depends on you and if you really want to do it and what the costs are for materials which I am sure would be cheaper than buying one. So it comes down to want lol, do you wanna go to the trouble or buy it. I couldn't build my own and bought the American Autowire setup and I loved it, nice and easy , came with instructions, and all you need and more to build it. (minus the crimpers) So money/work vs want/ease. just my opinion and I am sure some others will chime in as well

I think you answered your own question by being an electrician yourself. If you replace the harness with a plug and play unit, you have a slightly better than new 60 year old harness. The stock harness works great, and i replaced my engine harness with an M&H harness designed for HEI. If you do your own with say a painless kit, you get the added benefit of running the wires how you want, you get blade fuses, and you can add any accessories you may want.

I own a small business that specializes in electrical systems on classics and customs, and for my money, I use American Autowire exclusively. They cost a little more, but it's because they come with everything you need to install them properly. I looked at using Painless, but they require too much splicing in on connectors and being an electrical guy yourself, you know resistance is the enemy of electrical systems. That's my two cents worth.
