Re: ebrake cables
Can you post a pic of the damaged cable? I have an 83 C20 and have not had that problem. I don't recall seeing anything that was not metal on my cables.

Re: ebrake cables
Try putting a rubber hose over the cable to protect it from the damage. The rubber can take the heat if that's what it is. Its hard to believe the rear gets that hot. It most likely is chaffing from the rear-end movement if it laying against it . The rubber hose will protect it. Just split a piece of hose and slide it over in the area of contact.

Re: ebrake cables
In your pic I don't see anything obvious, other than yes, it's melted. I'd also look for an electrical wire crossed and worn over the cable. That cable may just be a ground for a short and the offender is further up the line.
Just me... seem if the rear was getting that hot some of the oil would have burnt off.

Re: ebrake cables
No wires come to mind. A heat source near the cable would be obvious, however if a wire is intermittently grounding out on the cable...
Used to a cable every few years, coming from Maine.

Re: ebrake cables
I know this is obvious but have to ask, where is your exhaust dumping?

Re: ebrake cables
In the picture, are you holding the cable up? Where does it sit normally?

Re: ebrake cables
Do you think it is possible exhaust heat could do that damage from that distance? What, three or four feet away? Might be worth trying a turn down on the cat or some fiberglass tape on the cable. I got some one inch tape from a powder coat supply company, Eastwood I think. I looked at my cable today and it is all metal at least on the outside.

Re: ebrake cables
i wouldnt think it would but dumber is known to happen. i will try the turn down anyway as its just to short to be legal. only other thing i can think of is dif fluid from the vent that runs up to the bed???
