Pitman arm
Is this much gap normal? Or is my steering getting ready to come apart?

It looks about the dame as mine. I just did my front end. You will find when you take it off, and then put it back on, it will only go so far.

Get a pressure washer in there to clean it up and you will see it's a tapered splined shaft and does not allow the pitman arm to slide all the way down to the steering box ,Throw a wrench on it and tighten it up ...problem solved ....

It looks normal to me, I just changed out my steering gearbox yesterday. It takes a 1-5/16" socket and after tight with the lock washer the splined shaft sticks out just a little past the end of the nut.

Looks fine, and if its factory I wouldn't worry. There is a lock washer on the nut and it is a tapered fit as mentioned.
If you are unsure and want to check it, the nut should be tightened to about 185 ft-lbs for proper seating of the pitman arm on the tapered splines. I just put one on my S-10 and it is almost exactly the same setup that is on my C-10 |
