Oil filter adapter issues
Is there a better type of oil filter adapter than the one from Mr. Gasket? My filter fell off today as the nipple was too far in and even though the filter seem tight, it still fell off. My engine is a 1963 283 that originally had the canister filter. Thanks

Re: Oil filter adapter issues
You should be able to get a factory GM one from a dealer. Other option is to hit up a junk yard and remove a factory one from another engine.

Re: Oil filter adapter issues
Thanks Chevy mike. I thought later models had the filter area recessed into the block and thethreaded nipple was threaded into the block? I'll check it out and see about changing out my setup

Re: Oil filter adapter issues
I had the same experience with an aftermarket adapter on a 283 back in the 70's. The adapter actually cracked and the filter fell off. I discovered the problem when the rods started knocking. I was really lucky finding a .010 under crank in good shape and a replacement set of matching bearings fixed the damage.

Re: Oil filter adapter issues
That was lucky. Ayou having any issues with your gauge? Mine reads ok, at first, but when the oil gets warmed up, and I'm stopped, it reads 0, but no knocking or engine noise. When I'm driving, it reads about 40-50psi. Possibly a bad gauge?

Re: Oil filter adapter issues
The factory oil filter adapter/bypass will not work on the '67 and earlier small blocks to convert them to a spin on oil filter.

Re: Oil filter adapter issues
I've been lucky enough that I haven't had to buy one of these adapters,.I have acquired a few from early small blocks that were scrapped. So I did a quick search and came up with these results.
http://www.summitracing.com/search/p...ter%20Adapters The TansDapt pieces might be better than Mr Gasket, but not by much. Myself I would go with the one from Perma Cool.

Re: Oil filter adapter issues
Thanks Capnfab. Do you think JB Wild would hold the nipple in place? You also answered my curiosity about the bypass as well

Re: Oil filter adapter issues
I have never used JB Weld, but one of the forms of Loctite might work.

Re: Oil filter adapter issues
I w thinking of Loctite as well. I just want the nipple to stop moving so my filter stays on. Thanks
