Wheel Stud Replacement
Quick question. While I was putting on new wheels and tires I snapped off a wheel stud snugging it down. I was curious if there was a easier way to put a replacement stud in, rather than taking all the brake components and backing plate off to press it in. I checked the FAQ quickly and didn't see anything.

Re: Wheel Stud Replacement
I replaced a couple of broken studs on my rear axle when it was still six lug, by pushing out the broken piece with a tie rod remover like this:
To install the new replacement, I simply pushed in in from the rear, applied a liberal amount of grease to 3 washers, and installed a lug nut backwards so the flat side was against the washers. The stud was then pulled in place with an impact wrench. This was all done on the truck. I may have added a bolt or something to lengthen the screw. It was almost 20 years ago so the details aren’t real clear.

Re: Wheel Stud Replacement
Just like markeb01 said, except, I used a nut one size larger instead of washers. I like his idea. A punch or old bolt can act as a drift to punch out the remaining stud in the axle. Did mine on the side of the road when there was just one stud left holding the wheel onto the front axle. A strongarm can be used in place of a impact gun.

Re: Wheel Stud Replacement
If this is the rear end, as far as getting access to install the new stud, when I replaced all of mine I simply pulled the C-clip from the axle and slid the axle out. You get a differential oil change out of the deal too ..
I used this to re-install the new studs, worked really well Amazon.com: Lisle 22800 Wheel Stud Installer:... |
