Newby Question. Which truck should I buy - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

Hi guys, It has been since 1974 since I have owned a 67-72 GM truck. I'm looking at 2 and the wife says I can only buy one. First one is a 68 C-10 black original paint (rusty & crusty) untouched 327 4speed. The 2nd is a 72 C-20 Ochre Longhorn 402, turbo 400, numbers matching, A/C. Rusty and crusty. Which would you choose and why?

Neither. Rusty and crusty is expensive. I would spend a little more for something that wasn't rusty and crusty.
If you are set on one of those, do you have any pictures you can post? Maybe your version of rusty and crusty is different than mine.

Sell your wife's vehicle to make room for both! That's a tough decision!

Personally, I think it depends on what you want to do with the truck when you're done. Are you looking for more of a sport truck or a workhorse?

If they have much rust, I would buy neither. Maybe buy a plane ticket to a dry western state and buy a rust free original, you will be miles ahead.

This one on ebay is what I'm talking about. it is in New York state but from out west and rust free.

I was thinking sport truck. Patina on the outside new underneath and inside.

I looked at one on eBay in Oregon. It had the patina I wanted. Black with red guts but way too much to ship to Canada.

You need A LOT more details sorted out in your head before you can make a decision. I suggest looking at the 67-72 differences, because some of that can save you a lot of time and money. Disc brakes, AC, 5 6 or 8 lug wheels, if you want a long or short bed, and that kind of thing can really become costly to find out after you purchase a truck.

The 68 swb or long? If short go 68, since you're goin for a sport truck. Not that I'm biased towards 68s..especially black ones...with patina

127" That's the one i'm leaning towards. I had a 68 in 1974.

If I had to choose one, I'd say the longhorn just because it has disc brakes and a big block. How much are they?

Could persuade the Mrs. To get both, take the big block and other features and put em in the 68....and just switch parts around then sell the longhorn

Hey there fellow Canucklehead.....LOL
Like the guys have said....avoid the rusty and crusty trucks. Not only is the body repair difficult and expensive but everything else under the truck will be difficult and expensive to fix. (ie: brake lines, suspension parts, trim-bed-bumper bolts....constant fight).
What is your budget and what are you willing to do to get one of these trucks in 'good running project condition'?
I help a lot of guys around here find southern examples (mine is a California export) and you have some great options available to you if you are willing to explore outside of your neighbourhood.

Just to be clear - the question was specifically about the 68 - and although it's a shorter wb than the 72 longhorn, the 68 IS a lwb truck at 127". Swb is is 115". Longhorns are 133" and are less common than either lwb or swb. If you want a patina hot rod - go 68. If you want a truck truck - go Longhorn. If the crust is bad, go neither and keep on lookin.

Canadian trucks don't have patina, they have gaping holes

Road trip! Find the truck you want. Rent/borrow/steal a truck and trailer (ok, don't steal one) OR fly to wherever and drive it home!

The grand or so you'll spend on getting that solid truck home will far outweigh the THOUSANDS you WILL spend in rust repair.

Here is an example of a nice truck for sale locally....I think it originally came from Alberta.
I know this guy and this truck and he is a reasonable (but very talkative....lol) guy. This truck is not a project, in very nice shape and is a very nice driver.

So in terms of dollars for dollars (ie: U.S to Canadian) this would be the equivalent of a $8500 U.S truck for sale....not too bad.

Nice truck in Victoria. I'm really leaning towards the 67-8 years. I like the grill style. V8 4spd Black with red guts. That combo has been my company colours for 30 years. Buckets would be nice or I would add them. A/C so we can winter in Arizona and not melt. Budget is what it is. Just sold my 71 Chevelle convertible in June before moving to AB. Still have my 72 Corvette coupe 410RWHP 480 RWftlbs torque.

I looked at a 67 in Oregon on the inter webs Black/Red, inline 6, 3 speed, PS, $3K
