700r4 TV cable issue

Anyone have any good recommendations for a 700r4 TV cable. I installed a B & M cable specifically designed for GM 700r4 transmissions, but the cable binds and wont get to Wide Open Throttle, no matter how I adjust it. Think the length of the cable is too short.

You may have a throttle lever issue. There is a kit to install the cable stud in the correct radius, for some carbs. It sounds like your stud needs to move closer to the throttle shaft. This will match the throw of the lever to the range of motion available from the cable.

When I installed the cable, I also installed the (2) recommended Holly carburetor brackets and cable stud.

Re: 700r4 TV cable issue

I can't see the cable being too different of a length. Small block or big block, the distance between the connections can only be about an inch difference. I'd recommend looking at the tv made ez kit from bowtie overdrives. I used their stuff with zero hassle, I have free movement from idle to WOT.

Re: 700r4 TV cable issue

Depending on what carb you have , you must get the appropriate tv bracket that bolts to the throttle plate on your carb , a bracket for the tv cable , and a stock tv cable works fine from a gran national . Summit has these parts , the cable must be fully out went the carb is at WOT .

Bowtie overdrive makes great products allso

Re: 700r4 TV cable issue

I had some issues with my 700R4 cable in the past. Someone stole the carb and broke the old cable instead of cutting or removing. I found a universal adjustable cable from TCI. I installed it through a couple of cable eyes that bolt to the bell housing just to guide it from the headers. One note on the universal cable, you do not use the stock cable seal with this cable. It has an O-ring.

Made a bracket from one I found. It had throttle cable and TV cable holes. I cut the throttle cable part off. Then put the TV cable in and adjusted it properly.

I then set up a switch to enable/disable the converter lock. It worked well but was a pain to lock unlock it and remembering when to do that.

Next step was an adjustable N.O. vacuum switch to do this for me. Then it would search and go in and out of lock. I built a simple circuit to delay from 3-10 seconds depending on the setting. I landed on 5. It now works great.

Sorry I don't have better pictures but if you'd like and think they would help I can get under the hood and take some.

Best of luck

care to share?? I have no problems fabricating a new bracket, I'm sure it's not that hard.

this is what I have as far as carb geometry...
sorry no pics..

SUBJECT: Proper installation of the throttle valve cable on after-market carburetors or fuel injections. This information applies to all 700R4, 4L60 and 200-4R transmissions. Throttle valve cable adjustment instructions, numbers 4, 5 and 6.
#1. The button that the cable hooks to at the carburetor or throttle body must have a 1 and 3/32-inch radius from the center of the throttle shaft to the center of the button the cable hooks to.

#2. Looking at the throttle shaft lever from the left side at idle position, 33% of the throttle lever total travel must be to the rear of the throttle shaft centerline. And at wide-open throttle, 67% to the front of the throttle shaft centerline. This will be about ½-inch to the rear and 1 inch to the front of the throttle shaft centerline.

#3. The throttle valve cable must be hooked up in this manner so the pressure will rise faster off idle and slow down at heavy throttle. If the pressure cable is pulled in a more even manner the pressure will be too low at light throttle. Failure to hook-up the throttle cable in this way will burn the three-four clutch pack up fast.

#4. The throttle valve cable controls transmission pressure. Adjusting this cable is the most important step when installing a 700R4, 4L60 or 200-4R transmission.

#5. The final step is to adjust the throttle valve cable. The cable must be adjusted so it is pulled fully out at wide-open throttle. To make sure disconnect the cable, hold the throttle wide open with your left hand, pull the cable fully out with your right hand and see if the cable end lines up with the button on the throttle lever. The cable should also be pulled out 3/8 to 1/2 of an inch at idle.

Re: 700r4 TV cable issue

There are at least 2 different lengths of TV cable for 700R4. The carbureted ones are 1 length, the Tuned-Port ones are another. Not sure about TBI, probably same as a carb.

Re: 700r4 TV cable issue

Thanks to everyone for their input. Happy to report that after following the directions from the post above from no1udknow, I finally got to WOT!!! On a completely separate note, just ordered new exhaust manifolds from Classic Industries today. As soon as they come in, they are going on along with the new Magnaflow dual exhaust - Merry Christmas to me!!

Though I can not take credit for the info, I'm glad I could share something helpful.

I love this site, so much knowledge. Thanks everyone!
