Windshield Removal to get Dash out HELP ME ive never removed a windshield
so i recently bout a 67 chevy pickup and i am trying to remove the dash to sand and paint it and redo the interior altogether my trouble when i tried to remove the dash was i ran into those pesky spot welds and realized the front windshield has to come out which is fine except ive never done that on a vehicle of any kind.. im confident in my mechanical capabilities to do it myself however im not above recommendations.. do i just remove the seal on the outside and inside and pull the windshield out or??
Please anything will help... before i get brave and grab some screwdrivers and go at hahha |

Re: Windshield Removal to get Dash out HELP ME ive never removed a windshield
The easiest thing to do is to take a long sharp razorblade and insert between the outside of the windshield and the seal. Cut the seal all the way around and then the windshield will pop right out. I say this because it's easier and cheaper to replace the seal than it is to get a new windshield from using screwdrivers to try and pry it out. You could also try the rope trick but that takes a lot of patience and a few cuss words. Take a piece of 3/8" rope long enough to go all the way around the windshield, work it in between the seal and the windshield on the outside, you will need someone on the inside to push on the windshield as you slowly pull on the end of the rope as you work your way around the glass. Good luck. I'm sure you'll get a few more ideas.

If all you are doing is painting the dash, i would leave the dash in.

If you are dead set on removing the windshield to paint it, cut it out. Trust me. Ask me how I know

I removed my windshield first time with no problems. Pair of good sturdy work boots and out she went. lol Did reveal the cancer hiding beneath... Always a price to be paid somewhere.

So when you re=install the dash, will the paint not burn when it is welded where needed?

I'd leave the dash in personally

Re: Windshield Removal to get Dash out HELP ME ive never removed a windshield
dont cut the seal
just take a stick and a long rope. Jam the stick behind the seal from inside the cab. Shove the rope in behind the seal. Do this along the sides and top. Have somebody stand outside and press against the windsheild to keep it from flying out. From inside push with your feet on both sides of the windsheild so it pops out evenly. Takes about 10 minutes and no pressure at all. Search for Lockdoc. he has a better explanation. Only thing I would caution is to be sure you get your rope all the way behind the seal or you arent doing anything... ask my how i know. then you get this: windsheild trim and gasket all ready to put back in or sold. |

Re: Windshield Removal to get Dash out HELP ME ive never removed a windshield
I used a utility knife and just cut thru the seal from the backside. Seriously... 5 minutes and it was out.
