Gas tank relocation
I know this has been discussed before . Can someone give me a link to a good thread on this subject ? I still have the tank in the cab. I know I've heard that old mustang tanks fit under the bed.... Do you get a reproduction mustang tank? If I can afford a new aluminum tank is that better? Sending unit that works with my stock gauge? Electric fuel pump ? Do I bypass the mechanical pump when using electric pump?

Re: Gas tank relocation
Here's one thread, http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...ank+relocation
The only question I can answer is regarding the pump. If you use an electric pump, then you do not need a mechanical pump. Get a block off plate, over the boss in the block, where the mechanical one would go. |

Re: Gas tank relocation
One suggestion. If you relocate the tank it may be wise to leave the original filler in place. It may help with resale should you ever decide to sell. When I bought my '64 it had the tank relocated under the box but the original filler was left in tact. I know in this case, I would not have bought the truck if the filler hole in the cab had been filled. Of course it's your truck and if you don't like the filler hole then by all means, fill it. Just something to consider.

Re: Gas tank relocation
ive read in other threads that the 1970 mustang 22 gal gas tank is an inexpensive tank that fits the 1957 truck......
1969 mustang tank is 20 gallons. is the sending unit for my stock 1957 gas gauge compatible with this tank? can someone who is using a mustang gas tank give me some info as far as what i need to get?

Tanks Inc sells a top feed tank with a sender that works on GM 30 ohm stock gauges. There are 18 and 22 gallon Mustang tanks. The 18 is a better fit. You can get the Tanks inc tank with a standard pickup tube for a carb engine or get it for an electric pump. If you get a stock mustang tank with a ford sender you need the buy a converter also sold by tanks inc to make it work with your gauges. If you would like some pricing on the tank setup from Tanks Inc send me an email. I sell them in kit form so you don't have to hunt for matching parts. I just need to know where you want the fill to come out |

Re: Gas tank relocation
I'm going to get a tank from tanks inc.. It's like a late 60s mustang tank, but with the feed on top , not the bottom like a stock mustang tank. The kit comes with a sender that works with my stock gauge. Planning on making a flip down license plate bracket and have the filler cap behind the license plate . Anyone here have this setup in their truck ?

Re: Gas tank relocation
I like the idea of hiding the filler behind the license plate . I'm gonna leave the stock filler cap on the cab

Re: Gas tank relocation
Here is some pic's of Industrial Chassis Inc. in Phoenix AZ. Steve there used a ford tank and filler at the back. If you look at my build I used a Mustang Tank.

Re: Gas tank relocation
I think the tank lends itself well to Task Force trucks because of the shape of the bottom of the tank that's why I went with it. It doesn't hang down looking at it from the rear like all the other square aftermarket ones or Chevy blazer tanks.

Re: Gas tank relocation
thanks for the pics. love it. thats what im planning to do. right now i have a trailer hitch welded to the frame that needs to be cut off. i also have my dual exhaust there.. probably have to move the exhaust too. if the exhaust hangs below the gas tank, how much clearance does it need so the heat isnt an issue?

Re: Gas tank relocation
I will be running my exhaust out the sides exiting below steps. When I get to that point I already mocked it up so it is not an issue, but I did see a truck build in classic truck magazine with the exhaust ran over the axle on the outside of the frame to the rear so that would be okay. Try going to the magazine site for reference, the same truck in that build is the one showing the front runner A/C system from vintage air.

Re: Gas tank relocation
Here's what I did for my 3200 89" long bed:
It's from Tanks, Inc. http://www.tanksinc.com/index.cfm/pa...prod/prd73.htm It's perfect for those that don't want to fill from the bed. What I did for my fill was to cut out the original flange in the cab and found a place on the rear fender with a similar curve and welded the flange in there. I also tucked this tank in up as high as I could for clearance: |

Re: Gas tank relocation
Thanks!
I'm guessing that those that don't know these trucks will think that. It kind of keeps the nostalgic look using the original rubber neck and stainless cap too. |

Re: Gas tank relocation
Another option for your viewing pleasure. Roger's install and my install are virtually identical except I opted for a small door on the rear fender for the more pro street look. Hoses and welding work is almost the same.

Re: Gas tank relocation
Just a btw,
Speedbump's install was what I based mine on. Give him the credit for finding this tank. It's a great one for this conversion IMO. Another thing I did with mine that was slightly different than his was to raise it up as much as absolutely possible. It's up about 1 1/2 inches higher than his. |

Re: Gas tank relocation
And I had the room, especially since I raised the bed floor 2", but the idea never crossed my mind. THAT'S why it's so neat to read these forums. You get ideas you might never have thought of......before it's too late.

Re: Gas tank relocation
I'm looking re-locate my gas tank as well, but have one question. What is everyone doing about the metal bed strip mounting bolts? Roger55, I love your idea, but it appears you've actually cut into one of your crossmembers, what have you done about the metal bed strip mounting bolts?

Re: Gas tank relocation
Word to the wise from someone who has seen it happen. If you do leave the stock filler in place on the cab after moving the tank rather than filling the hole do yourself a favor and cut off the filler neck and weld a plug in it or put a locking cap on it and leave the key at home so no one has access to the filler neck. I had a friend get several gallons of gas run into the cab if his truck because a kid who borrowed the truck decided to fill the tank and yes, stick the nozzle in the filler neck on the cab and had gas running out the door. His tank was easy to see as it sat in the front of the bed with the filler neck sticking up for the world to see but the kid missed that fact.
