Steering setup
I'm about to begin work on replacing the old, original steering couplings (see photos). I have a '56, but the front end setup is from a '71 or '72. At the moment, all I know is that the shaft is a 3/4" DD. Won't know spline count etc. on the steering box end until I take everything apart. I'm hoping to be able to replace that old bell-coupling with a simple U-joint, and since the box is in good shape, I will be swapping out the rag joint for a new replacement. Any tips or suggestions are appreciated. Thanks!

Re: Steering setup
The XJ shafts are $12 at my local pick a part.
Almost a bolt in (a bit of grinding) and you won't need the toasted rubber seal that's toast in your pic. https://www.google.com/search?q=xj+s...ft+&gws_rd=ssl http://coloradok5.com/forums/showthread.php?t=286086 |

Re: Steering setup
Thanks! I already pulled that old seal out (in pieces) and pumped some grease up in the cavity!

Re: Steering setup
Yeah, I've always thought that top joint was a bit wonky. The XJ part has about 1/32" play by my uncalibrated guestimate.
From the angle of the shaft and your description of the swap, I'd guess the rubber bit failed due to the angle of the column shaft difference. Rebuilding rag joints is an iffy thing due to the way it gets done. Torquing on rubber leaves a connection that will loosen over time. I plan to snag a few more of these for another splined at both ends Camaro in the garage. |

Re: Steering setup
Yeah, I probably won't rebuild the rag joint. Replacements aren't too expensive.
