Cars behind me complaining about the smell

I haven't had my truck that long but at times when a buddy is following me in their car they say my truck stinks! Not so much a gas smell though. They'd lean towards saying exhaust. There is no smoke at all. Doesn't seem like it's burning any oil. Is it just the way these old motors smell when they are burning gas?

I'd make sure it's tuned well, but there's still going to be a little bit of exhaust smell. It definitely beats the smell of catalytic converter exhaust.

I have the same problem, but I have a cold cylinder and low compression in another, no smoke. Make sure you have her tuned good, and enjoy it.

I don't think they are hippies, probably too young to be. I believe they are just young enough to only be around since most vehicles on the road have cats, F/I, and mostly computer controlled. The same age group that thinks a truck sounds like it will blow up driving at 75 mph with no overdrive or that drum brakes won't stop a truck. Back when this was all there was it was all normal.

I know my tailpipe stink was reduced almost completely after hooking up my vacuum advance to the ported or timed vacuum port on the carb.

Before I did that, my vac advance was plugged and the gas fumes were so bad your eyes would water if you stood behind it.

To really develop that vintage bouquet you need to add some lead to the mix. I personally love the smell of a vintage engine running, even my old '72 bikes have that smell.

I swapped to an HEI with a vac advance a little bit ago. And got her timed up. (i think) Originally I set the idle advance to 12. Talking to a few others I set the total timing up to around 34 degress if I remember right. Revved to 3,000 until my digital timing light said I was at 0. Letting it idle after that I thought it was saying I was around 18 on idle timing? too much?

My initial timing is at 12 BTDC at idle with the vac advance hooked up to ported vacuum.

I believe it's around 34-36 degrees total advance at WOT.

My truck runs awesome and it's not making any pinging noises but I'm not 100% sure on the total timing. I've only checked it at idle thus far, I guess I need to rev it while I have my timing light on it....LOL

The timing was set by the mechanic who installed my engine for me.

Old car exhaust smells almost as good as the exhaust from an old 2-stroke outboard blowing in your face as you are back trolling for walleyes.

Speaking of roasting field mice, my '72 Chevelle was re-purposed this past summer. I got an infestation of pocket gophers. These are the little guys that leave mound of dirt in your yard while doing their excavating. I'm sure they are called something different where you are. Well my '72 is out of tune a bit and the gas was in the tank too long. The process involves backup up to near a mound, finding the hole with a screwdriver, jamming a hunk of exhaust pipe in the hole, and attaching one of the duals on the running car to the pipe in the ground.

Works like a champ.
