Just How Much is Enough???
As I read the forum at night to wind down, my lovely lady reads along too. So last night I am reading thru Hart Rods build "Shifted" in the projects and builds forum.
She asks "Just how much do these guys spend on these trucks?" Of course I am not going to answer for anyone , so I tell her only as much as it costs to get the truck all done, sometimes a couple times. She replies "Oh, so a couple thousand, if you get it right the first time?" "Well....yes dear." Boy I hope she isn't home when my ECE order shows up...lol

Re: Just How Much is Enough???
I have to answer, it might make some waves, but I'll say it anyway.
You can spend as much as you want on your truck, it's not even close to what you're going to spend on a woman. For them, there is no such thing as enough. I might be exaggerating, but you get the idea. |

Please help keep this forum focused on our trucks, not on any personal issues you may have. Thank you.

Re: Just How Much is Enough???
I'm not currently married so I don't have to answer to anyone as to how much I spend on my truck. My girl friend has a pretty good idea, but she hasn't said anything ( YET )... I don't even know exactly, but I know it's north of $20,000.... And it's not done yet !!! "LOL"

My wife knows exactly how much I have in all of my vehicles. I even have tags on a lot of the harder to find parts with a current value. I have also had a couple of walkthroughs with my kids so they know whats going on. I don't want her to get taken for a ride if something happens to me. I told them that they may not get exactly what I have stuff marked at but it should be close, I don't have the prices exaggerated. I have a sheet of paper in each glove box that tells exactly what each truck is and if any modifications have been done to it, any problems with it, and how it runs, etc.. Another thing I do is to put the box ends from any filters or new parts like bearings, mounts, plugs, etc., I have installed on the truck in the glove box. Be sure and write on them exactly what they are for as many times all they have on them is a number. LockDoc

Re: Just How Much is Enough???
These wife threads crack me up! My wife is awesome. Two years ago we were out fishing and she asked if I would like a race quad for cruising. I of course said yes and next spring we had a built raptor 660, well fast forward I got pulled over because the cop hated sport quads and we couldn't ride double so I guess we sold it in hopes of looking for a cruiser bike. I really wanted a sport bike but the family was hard to convince so we we re looking for a cruiser and she wasn't impressed but there we saw a Suzuki sv650s and we sat on it. Before the end of the day it was ours. Family wasn't too happy but she stood up and said she wanted it peoples face were priceless. Now we're looking at getting a 4x4 and lifting it and maybe soon repainting our truck. She's always working on things with me and rarely leaves my side. I've gotten more toys with her then I would've by myself

Re: Just How Much is Enough???
my wife loves the fact that i have something to occupy me and get me out of the kitchen licking the batter spoons and eating the frosting when shes making her specialty cakes,
"get back in the garage and finish that truck!" she tells me as for the money spent... well i mind my business on how much them cake pans and such cost and she doesnt give a hard time about buying part ater part after part

Re: Just How Much is Enough???
That is like asking "how far is away?" You can spend as much as you want, but it would probably be less than a brand new truck that you can't work on. Besides, a man has to have a hobby, right?

Re: Just How Much is Enough???
It it is entirely possible that, the monetary investment could easily exceed the value.
Accept this fact and enjoy the truck. Money be dammed! How much is enough? I'll let you know, when I get there. |

Re: Just How Much is Enough???
Total price for the restoration was a little over 10x the original purchase price. The idea was my wife's. The truck is amazing and has won a bunch of awards at prestigious events but that is not what we built it for. Instead it has three purposes: 1. To get the word out on our business 2. Be a daily driver for her (20k on it in 18 months) 3. To keep a piece of the family alive (grandfather bought it new in 71)
We have worked the majority of the bugs out now but I did have to remind her a few times that this was her suggestion. Like that time the air fitting failed in the middle of nowhere Utah desert or while replacing the second pos Griffin radiator or when the air bag was torn by odd chance and I had to buy a cut off tool and compressor to get it fixed or when the belt tensioner failed in Yellowstone and the ac tensioner failed two weeks later. As I joke now the truck has been restored twice! If your wife isn't on board then the project will be squashed when stuff happens.

I thought my wife was real supportive, I mean she has been buying me tools for years. She works for a truck parts company and listens to guys there and asks about things. She's bought me floor jacks, paint guns, impact guns, socket sets none of which I told her I wanted or needed but all were tools I wouldn't have bought myself. And I love her for everything she's given me and being my life partner.

Re: Just How Much is Enough???
A question that has no answer. like "How high is up"?
to the farmer just keeping it on the road to make deliveries in Guatemala probably a lot less that most of us. To those striving for perfection a lot more. Want to buy the latest and greatest in drivetrains and suspension (especially lowering stuff) "LOOK OUT HANNAH". I've got a Chevelle that's like that. Polar opposite of what I am doing with my trucks. Got a 64 S.W.B. fleetside project started that I have less than a grand in. Building a 68 1 ton dually short/step side about 1500 so far. Long ways to finish but going to keep em on the cheap. I've been down that "show truck" road before (twice, go figure) and will never do that again. I don't want my trucks just to "look like trucks". To each his own.
