Removed manifold on 283 and OH MY

she's got a pound of sludge and 2 completely blocked coolant passages...now this motor ran and idled great just looks like someone got carried away with the bars leaks...should I percervear and stay the coarse.? Knock out the crud...clean up the galley..put in the manifold, old rad etc and flush motor with atf and the rad several times?

Update ...it was the egr passages that were plugged....doh!

Most EGR passages are plugged on any of these old motors lol.

Most of those old motors especially the 283 never had egr passages!!
Exhaust heat crossover though!

Yeah my heat crossover was solid Took a shop vac and a few tries to clean it out.

Damn learning every day....heat cross over plugged and will need to chip away at it..will keep the shop vac going

So, are you saying you found a lot of oil sludge? Is it collected under the valve covers too?

Yes I did, the vent system was messed up..bad maintenance etc
