Modular dies at idle ????

My truck (350 with HEI) will stall randomly sitting at idle at a stop light. It will start right back up. It doesn't do it every time. If the modular is going out would it just stall at idle or would possibly lose power while driving as well?

I've heard the issues of the modular getting it and the engine not starting until it cools off but mine will start right back up.

Does it do it mostly when it is cold or after it is warmed up too? What RPM is your idle set at? Usually the module just dies but I suppose it could have intermittent problems from heat. There is supposed to be a thermal paste between the module and the dist. body.

Here is a picture of a GM module. They are pretty easy to replace.

Hi Leon, i would say both cold and warm. Once in the driveway but all the other times it was up to temp to or from my way to work.

If you have a buddy that has an extra HEI laying around I would try the module out of it in yours and see what it does. I also think that auto parts stores can check them for you if you take the module out and take it to the store....

The module usually either works or it doesn't. In most instances when the module goes out it[the engine] normally doesn't crank again until the module is replaced. Jim

I've had HEI modules die slowly- well, over a two period, that's slow compared to instant death. Use the heat sink paste to mount the new one, or suffer the consequence of repeating the ordeal. Dying at idle though, I'd see what my idle speed and carb settings are, first. Fuel pump pressure, too. Something ain't right, and I wouldn't condemn the module too quickly. I've had them tested at LAPS, it can depend on how adept the counter help is at following instruction on the testing machine, though.

When my module died I was driving down the road and boom the truck was off... coasted to the side of the road and was able to get it started again after a minute or two. 100 yards down the road it was done and it was all I could do to get off the road.
Replaced the module for about $12 bucks and used the included goop and all has been good...Tthat reminds me I need to pick one up to throw in the glove box next time I'm at the parts store.
It sounds like to me you have something else going on.
