Re: what differential is this?

Welcome to the board! That is an Eaton HO52. I believe that is called a load bolt, or a pinion preload bolt. Can't tell you what to do with it, hopefully someone else will chime in. In 38 years I've never needed to mess with mine.

Eatons are tough as nails but some parts can be hard to come by. Try your local NAPA or other parts store if you need anything for it.

Edit: If you need to do brakes, check this link: http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=660022

Looks like an Eaton HO52 to me. Parts can be hard to find for them depending on what you need.....

Re: what differential is this?

There is really no "maintenance adjustments" to be made. The bolt rubs on the inside edge of the ring gear to prevent deflection imposed from the pinion under heavy load

Re: what differential is this?

Too bad you don't live close to me here in Oregon, I'll give you two of these for spares!! Yes hard to get parts and all of them low geared. DANA 60's much better. Yes they can be swapped over, with minimal problems.

Re: what differential is this?

If the loc nut has been loosened my thoughts would be to screw the bolt in until it just lightly touched the ring gear, then tighten the loc nut. I have yet to find a spec on it, mine has never been loosened.

Like others have said, it is an Eaton, hard to find parts for and expensive, change it out to a corporate 14 bolt, they are excellent and can be found in any wrecking yard,
