BBC head gasket problem - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

Hey guys,

I am rebuilding the 454 in my 71. here's the problem, when I was getting ready to install the heads, there was a warning note in my fel pro gasket kit. It says there are 2 series of coolant configurations for the mark IV 454's. One uses the coolant holes in the bottom of the head and the other does not.

The heads I am using are from the original 402 because they are oval port and the original heads were the small square port. 454 is from an 83 GMC 1 ton.

The 402 does not have the lower coolant holes in the block, but it's heads do. The 454 has the lower coolant holes in block and head.

Which gasket do i use?

Fel Pro 1047 will work. Work on all series of BBC block & head configurations. I used it on my '78 454 with Edelbrock heads.
