1966 K20 Manual to Power Steering question
Hello,
I recently found my dream truck, a '66 K20, although this baby will need lots of work. I am getting together the 'list' before starting on this project. This truck does not have the original 6 Cyl, the one they put in it has a power steering pump on it so I was wondering if you guys could help me out with what else will it take to convert? Is it as simple as a different steering box or is it more than meets the eye? Also, how can I tell if the 6 banger I have is a 292 or not? Thanks much, Karl |

Re: 1966 K20 Manual to Power Steering question
one of the differences is in the eng perches which come out from the sides of the frame. on the 292 installation and only on the 292 the passenger side perch is shorter and further forward that with the rest of the engs. you can see the differences in the pictures
a later p/s box 69-87 (there was a change to metric threads around 80 ) ; it makes it easier to match with the proper years. get one of capt fabs p/s box mounting adaptors( he is a member here}. you wll have to modify your frt steering arm to take the later drag link and to shorten it to match the swing of the new pitman arm and it is not the welding job for an amateur with a mig welder. get some who is qualified ron |

Re: 1966 K20 Manual to Power Steering question
Hey Ron,
Thanks much for the reply. I did see that adapter plate you talked about in searches, so that will be the direction I go in. If a guy had a steering column out of a power steering truck, would that take care of the shortening and welding? Or does the shortening have to do with the newer ps box? Thanks again, Karl |

Re: 1966 K20 Manual to Power Steering question
power steering box is the same for manual or p/steering in these years as they use the hydr cyl assist and 4 x 4 never had p/s until later. so no matter which column that you put in there you will have to modify. the capt also has the new end for the bottom of the steering column shaft

Re: 1966 K20 Manual to Power Steering question
thanks for the offer ron, mine seems to be ok. I'm keeping my fingers crossed lol. gave my old one to mattbert for his build. I might keep a lookout for a divorced 205.
take care--------

Re: 1966 K20 Manual to Power Steering question
Thanks you guys for the replies. That photo of the adapter plate from your build sure helped me visualize. Your whole build made me visualize, really nice. If it is ok, I will give you a holler when I get my ps project going.
Thanks again, Karl |
